Thanks for sharing both reports.
Very nice.
good job Rog – on the TR and the induction into backpacking.
You make even casual photos look good.
"And the best part is you almost never need to carry a tent."
My first trip in the SE Utah canyons I believed that too. On the first night I had a rattle snake right up in my face… got up VERY carefully and moved camp. It was a 6 or 7 day trip and I never slept right the rest of the trip. Have never gone without a tent in SE Utah since. There are also scorpions. Ever since, I carry a two man tent for just me. I put everything in the tent at night, including my entire pack. That way I sleep better knowing I don't have to sleep with rattle snakes or scorpions and that they won't be in my gear in the morning either.

Rog, I'm getting kids out too (9 and 10) – we went to Killarney last year, awesome. This summer going to some Quebec parks. Great photos from Canyonlands.
But I'd like to also get them out with their friends too since they are getting to the age where they disappear with friends for an entire weekend. How do you deal with the gear issue for friends if they don't have any? It seemed to me you had an entire "friend" kit pre-built. I saw identical mugs, houdinis, puffies, shoes, backpacks for all the kids in the photos I think. Did you just go all out and buy a bunch of key extra gear for lend out?
Fantastic pics Rog! Utah is just incredible.
I was wondering, in the 5th photo down I see part of a snow capped peak. Is that Manti La Sal?
Really cool.
Where in Canyonlands is that? I was there (Island in the Sky) in October and it looked nothing like it.
Great pics, Rog.
You guys had some good weather. I spent the past week climbing at Indian Creek (directly east of Canyonlands). There was snow and/or rain every day. We had continuous rain/snow/sleet from around 10:30 pm Thurs night till midday Friday, about 2 in of snow. Beautiful area and good times nonetheless.
