So I am relatively new to the mindset of going light, but I love what it has done to my trips so far.

If you're like me and you made your own cozy out of reflectix and aluminum tape, you probably have enough reflectix left over to make a winter tent out of it.

Inspiration: While on the Black Forest Trail in late March, I discovered that the "dry creek beds" and "stream crossings" became "very wet mid size creeks" and "are you kidding me rapid crossings". My Salomon trail runners got wet. Again, and again, and again. Very cold, and very wet. After 3 days, immersion foot cracks started in, and it sucked.

I could never get my shoes dry by morning, and I needed a way to move about camp with my night socks without getting leaves/mud/wet. I ended up sucking it up and going barefoot in the mid 30s mornings while my shoes and hiking socks sat in the sun.

SO. With that gargantuan preface, I give you my first MYOG that I did not copy from someone else.

Step 1) While stepping on a sheet of reflectix, trace the outline of your foot with a Sharpie.

Step 2) Draw rectangular 'wings' on either side of your foot, to allow for the strap over your foot. Measurement is not that important here, but err on the side of too long.

Step 3) Cut out the shape you just made.

Step 4) Wrap the wings around your foot with your socks on, and add a piece of aluminum tape to the top and bottom of the wings, where they meet mid-foot.

Step 5) Swag around the campsite with more bling than Nelly's Air Force Ones. Surprisingly comfortable and warm underfoot for just over half an ounce. I call them the Chrome Foam Flyweights.

Nice project. Insulates you from the cold ground. And stops Big Brother from scanning you for athlete's foot.

Is this viral marketing for The Big Lebowski 2 – The Dude On Mars ?

Interesting idea, thanks for sharing. :)

I doubt the reflectex will hold up. Likely to be punctured by angular rocks, pine cones, sticks, etc. But let us know how the work out.

Five years ago I made some shoes like this out of Reflectix, except that they were intended to be ultralightweight shower shoes. The only difference is that on mine, the part that goes over the top of the foot was mosquito net. Each end of the netting was embedded between two layers of Reflectix.

They could probably be made for use as stream crossing shoes. However, you would want to use about four big rubber bands on each one to hold it onto your foot in the water current.

I've gone back and forth on camp shoes. light weight sandals made a set from old insoles just don't use them at all, i have one bad experience where a stick splinter jamming between my big toe in camp wearing sandals. so I'm going no camp shoes for under three day trips and deal with taking shoes on and off and picked up vivobarefoot shoes for longer trips for the added toe protection and pay the weight penalty. 2 1/2 days of continues wet feet is about all i can handle comfortable before they become high maintenance from my experience. i haven't tried this theory out yet but it's what I'm going with for now. i like the idea thought might have to make a set for just for fun.

had to get out the scale: diy insole sandal 1oz each
vivobarefoot 4oz each size 12 (sure i could shave an oz off)
