I opted to wait until the day of my dive into Dark Canyon, to drive from my home in Colorado to the Sundance trailhead in southeast Utah. By 4:00 am I was on the pavement at cruising speed in order to make it to my start point somewhere around 10:00. The sunrise near Moab and the loneliness of HWY 95 between Blanding and the Colorado River was spectacular. Upon my arrival to the dirt road, I took my cute little four-banger on a maze of minimum maintenance roads to reach Sundance.

Good stuff Tim. According to reports the desert Bighorns are doing pretty well down there. My one trip down there involved a brief standoff with a ram at one of the bypasses around the pools down in the lower canyon. Quite the contrast with the arroyo and cracked-mud wasteland down at the river.

How much coaxing was required to get a zero-clearance vehicle to the sundance TH? I've been thinking about a return this fall.

Thanks for the comments guys.

Dave,

There were seven ewes total in that group. Pretty cool experience. They acted a lot like the moose I've encountered backpacking- they don't seem to care all that much about your existence.

The only section of the road to Sundance that gets tricky for low-clearance is the last half mile or so. Its negotiable over the taller rock, just slow. I'd imagine for folks that don't know how to drive it, hate it. Kind of fun actually.

I think a solid five (or so) day trip would be to head north through Woodenshoe and connect back with Sundance. Point to point. That place left me wanting more, and I'm still a little bummed I didn't get to see Youngs or the Glen Canyon confluence.

@Dave C, saw a Prius at the Sundance trailhead a few weeks ago. Don't know if it was stuck there ;-)
