I've been searching around for a pair of Salomon Men's Quest 4D II GTX Hiking Boots. Today I dropped by REI and found a pair for $220 and was going to use the dividend and 20% members deal to buy them but decided to check online one more time before I purchased. So glad I did. Went online to Amazon and found the same pair for $162.01 with free prime shipping. Great deal on a normally $230 retail pair of very highly rated boots.

Thought I'd pass it along in case anyone else was looking.

at that price why not go for some lightweight Inov-8 Roclite 286?

Unfortunately I have some issues with a metatarsal bone in my left foot. It was badly broken when a rock fell on my foot while climbing in my 20's. It never really healed right. Now at age 53, it haunts me. I have to use boots that don't flex as much and have a fairly stiff sole. The Salomon's had the perfect balance of flex and stiffness.

I actually prefer Merrell Moabs to hike in. Cheap and efficient for 3 season hiking in the South. But, the softness of the soles and the flex was causing the old injury to flair back up far too often..

I'll post an update after I've done some miles in the Salomons.

I, too, have an old foot injury that requires stiffer-soled footwear on all but short day hikes. I've now settled on the Salomon Comets — they're a bit lighter than the Quests, but still have the same stiffness. Maybe try them for your next pair…
