After not finding what I wanted in non-cargo pants I am broadening the search to include cargo pants and polyester and other synthetic materials. Thanks.

Both are cheap (compared to "hiking" pants). The durability of the dress pants is not very good, but they aren't too hot to wear while hiking either. The work pants are very durable but hot to hike in. I've gotten 1000 miles out of dress pants for trail hiking and sitting around in camp. But if you do any scambling / light climbing – you can wear through or rip pieces within a couple of days.

Fishing pants are like a cheaper version of hiking pants. They are sold by bass pro in my area for about $35. The main difference compared to thinner hiking pants such as the rei Sahara seems to be thinner cut thighs, wider cut calves, and no crotch gusset. They don't fit me well so I haven't tried them, but they appear to be a little more durable than the Sahara pant (which is particularly thin for a hiking pant).

Most of the "outdoor/travel" companies–Columbia, Ex Officio, Royal Robbins–offer synthetic pants with non-cargo styling. They all go on sale regularly. I think the nicest non-cargo synthetic men's hiking pant I've found is the Prana Brion: http://www.prana.com/brion-pant.html?color=mud They retail for $70 but are on sale for ~$40-$50 in some sizes if you look around (backcountry, REI, prana's clearance section). They fit like a good, basic pair of jeans and they're a nice stretchy nylon weave.

6pm.com and sierra trading post are my go-to for clearance prices on apparel. You can almost always find something for under $50, under $30 if you get lucky with size availability. As someone mentioned in your other thread, if you're willing to forgo a traditional fly the Grammici Rocket Dry pants are awesome–you can often get them off STP for ~$30.

If you want cheaper than that, I'd just go to Goodwill and pick up some poly dress pants. They may only last you a season, but you'll only be out a few bucks.
