Hello ,
I'm new to the forums but have been researching ultralight backpacking for over a year. Ive decided to buy a double wall tent . I'm interested in the MSR Hubba Hubba Nx2 but would consider the Tera Nova Solar Photon 2 also. I don't mind the extra weight of the MSR if is more durable with better features etc. Are there any other double wall tents you would recommend instead of the ones i have mentioned?

Thank you.

Hey Alex,

Take a look at the Big Agnes Copper Spur 2. Similar to the Hubba Hubba nx and lighter. Also take a look at the 2 person tents made by Big Sky International.

How does the Msr hubba hubba Nx 2 handle strong wind and temps below freezing? Is it almost as good as the hilleberg anjan 2?

Depends a bit on your definition of strong wind. Both will hand 20-30 MPH winds just fine. But, if you're above treeline in some REALLY windy places, the Anjan will do better. It's a tunnel design and can put up with a lot. And, while MSR quality is high, Hilleberg's is even higher (as reflected in their higher prices).

If you want the most weatherproofness in a double-wall tent and don't mind a bit more weight for the features, a Hilleberg Anjan or Enan (new tent – side door and lighter than the Anjan, but less interior space) is tough to beat. If you're mostly below treeline or don't want to spend the $$, an MSR is good – or as someone else mentioned, a BA Copper Spur is a great option.

Thanks for the reply. There are lots mountains where I live so wind performance is a priority. So the Enan would be much stronger in high winds than the hubba nx. Would I need to get the Acto for snow? I notice Tera Nova make similar tent which is lighter called the Laser Photon. How does the Laser Photon compare to the Hilleberg Enan?

Overall – the enan is probably better suited for wind. Depending on the way you orient it, it will definitely deform some (it just has the one hoop pole and a few end struts) but will bounce back better. The MSR style tents often end up with bent poles after more intense wind storms.

As usual, depends on the snow capabilities you want. If it's just to protect against the off-chance of snow on a typical 3 season trips, then the Anjan and Enan would do fine – as do many other tents with flys that reach at or near the ground. If you want more serious snow protection, you'll want to look at the Akto – or even better the Soulo – as they don't have any mesh-only areas.

As a note – the Anjan would certainly be more comfortable in serious wind than the Enan. While the Enan is tough – it's slightly lighter fabric and smaller interior space would make it less ideal for major wind.

The Anjan, while a little heavy, is a pretty bomber double wall shelter with lots of space for areas with serious wind. If you can afford it, it would be my choice/recommendation (unless you want the absolute lightest way – in which case you can consider the Enan – or something like the TarpTent Moment DW).
