This isn't a backpack but it is a pretty cool day hike. After 4 years my buddy finally drew 2 spots in the Wave lottery. I met him out there last weekend. Here's a few pics.

We also went over and briefly checked out Wire Pass canyon.

AS I understand it this place was mostly unknown and no lottery until some German magazine print some pics and an article a few years ago. Now the place is crawling with Euros and it is hard for an American to get to see it… Torques my jaw…

These are American Park Lands and we should have priority over foreign visitors.
Pretty when it's hard for an American to see his own parks…

The problem isn't the Euros, it's the media and the Internet.

Back on topic… incredible pictures!

A friend was kind enough to invite us on his permit about 9 years ago (he'd been applying for years!). I'm embarrassed to admit that I didn't bring a camera with me! Fortunately, our host was an accomplished photographer, so we have a few prints that he sent us.

Nice to see your photos. It's a really interesting area. I've also been to the other Coyote Buttes area, which is a bit less spectacular, but still quite eerily beautiful.

BTW, permits are issued (a) via on line lottery; or (b) walk-up permits at ranger station. They do not take nationality into account.

Good stuff Randy. I still need to get myself down to Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs at some point … perhaps next spring.

Thanks Tim. I did this with John who you met on the hut trip. We're going to go back at some point and do an overnight, with Jens, who you also met, down Buckskin Gulch slot canyon, which is supposed to be the longest slot canyon in the world. If you're interested, I'll let you know when we start planning it. I'm guessing next year.
