So I have a Gossamer Gear Rukus pack which I'd like to add some grosgrain attachment loops to the sides and bottom to strap things and for compression. I'd also like to add on a top strap to go over the cinch top. Pretty basic I know, but this would be my first time modifying any gear or sewing in general.

Can I sew some grosgrain loops and webbing right onto the pack fabric as it is without opening up all the seams? I know it would look better and be stronger undoing the seams and restitching but I'm not comfortable enough doing that yet.

Any advice in general?

Thanks!

It would definitely be better all around to open the seams (as you acknowledged) — but if you don't want to do that, I would give you two pieces of advice:

1. Make sure you burn off ALL sharp edges of the grosgrain/webbing that you are planning to attach.

2. Add a small piece of fabric on the inside of each attachment point (to reinforce it).

It may not look so pretty, but it should work!

Thanks Valerie for your response. I'm hoping to get by without undoing it and was hoping there's a manageable way since I have no sewing skills unfortunately.

Can you explain more about the reinforcement patch? Would that go on the inside of the pack Or the outside?

I've seen a couple packs that seem to have a square reinforcement pack on the outside that has webbing attached for a top strap buckle. Should I look into doing something like that?

I am pretty sure she means on the inside, that is where I would put it. For any sort of load strap the main force on the stitching will be on the inside as you pull away from the bag, a patch here will spread that out and reduce chances of tearing through the bag material.

What would be the best fabric for a reinforcement patch?

Would grosgrain work for small areas?

As George mentioned, I DID mean to reinforce on the inside. I would use some type of nylon ripstop or cordura. You'll be using only tiny pieces, so the fabric weight won't be very important!
