Online Sources of Down Hoods

Hi,

There's a local store here in Santa Cruz that makes down balaclavas. It is run and owned by a couple who sew sleeping bags, pillows, and comforters (and the aforementioned balaclavas) in the shop. Give them a call and I'm sure they'll be able to get you either a balaclava or come up with a hood design for you. The balaclavas are, if I remember correctly, less than $50.

The JRBs are on sale, but green? Maybe I can wear it inside out :-)

I'm in the same boat. I want a down/synth. hood for use with my quilt and can't seem to justify paying what people want for them (and no offense to BPL, but especially theirs). I made my own down quilt so I presume I could sew a hood – especially if it is synthetic because then it would be very cheap and there would be no stuffing of down. Even at that, it sure would be nice to find a cheap one somewhere so I don't have to make it myself. I'm all ears…

Get these on sale now at JRB for $47.95. A great quality product. Sure it's green, but get over it. This is backpacking, not a fashion show.

I opted for a oversized OR Windstopper Fleece bomber hat. Carhartt makes one too and theirs has a drop down face mask.

I bought it a size too big so I can layer it over a wool watch cap or, in my case, an old ray way bomber hat kit that I made that the string had come off of.

If nothing else, I would think that you could buy one of these pre made hats, turn them inside out, then sew some syntetic insulation and a liner on it, turn it right side in, and have a great hat.

Me … I wanted the versitility of layering options and for a total of 3 oz, I'm willing to pay the 1 oz weight penalty.
