This is my second attempt at a MYOG pack. My first was a typical single compartment box shaped, x-pac fabric, frameless, approx 45 liter pack with removable hip belt. After one season of use I wanted something a little different, but also got my own sewing machine! Things I wanted to change this time around:

-a much smaller and thus lighter pack as most of my trips are 3-season, 2-4 days, and a starting weight of 15-20 lbs(including pack and consumables)
-better load balance between the front and back
-carrying capacity in the front pockets that would give me access to nearly everything I could need during the day including maps
-water bottles up front
-less padding in the shoulder straps
-something that would conform to the shape of my back rather than the box shape(or sausage when fully packed) of my previous pack.
-a removable sit pad to add structure and help with ventilation
-no hip belt since I never actually used the detachable hip belt on my previous pack
-no side pockets because I get really tired of contorting my shoulders to get things in and out of those

Here is what I came up with:

front

side

pack

map pocket

I borrowed several ideas from existing packs like the UD fastpack, then added some of my own to come up with a running vest style pack. By the way, I have no intention of actually running in it. I had some 1.4 oz cuben leftover from a previous project so I used that for the main pack body, which is sewn then taped on the inside. The front is a stretch mesh material with a DWR finish(from an old pair of running pants). I used 3mm 3d spacer mesh for the shoulder strap padding, and lycra mesh for the back pocket and sleeves for the sit pad. Came out to 10oz for the pack plus 2oz for the sit pad. Feels good loaded and carrying it around the house but haven’t actually taken a trip with it yet. Headed to the Guadalupe Mtns in the next few weeks to try it out.

David,
The Vest pockets are the scavenged running pants material. Some blend of Polyester and Spandex with a water repellent finish. Not exactly sure because I threw away the scraps with the clothing label.

Cool pack Chris. I've always liked the idea of carrying some weight on the front of my pack. I love being able to access certain items while hiking without having to remove my pack. Let us know how the pack carries after your trip & how much weight you were carrying.

I've wondered if a shoulder strap supported only pack would carry better if the straps were wider than typical. Such that the straps would spread the load across more of the trap & delt area, say with a 5" or 6" wide strap only at that area, versus concentrating the load in that trap/delt junction. Also, thought of using a thicker and/or more dense padding in that area would feel better over a multiple day trip.

Rob, yes, wider straps will carry weight more comfortably. The thickness of the shoulder strap will increase comfort as well but not with as pronounced of results.

This an awesome looking pack. How does the stretch-woven perform with full water bottle? Lots of side-to-side sloshing around or does it hold the weight well?

Sam, I haven't noticed any sloshing or movement in the water bottles. I am using a square Fiji bottle with the idea that it would be more comfortable lying flat on my chest. Also, the bottle pockets are square on the bottom so they fit fairly snug. The back of the bottle pocket has a layer of cuben so it doesn't stretch at all. I suspect if I used a round bottle there would be more sloshing. I'll let you know how it performs in few weeks.

Nice job, that looks pretty sweet! I've been thinking of trying to make something like that. How long did it take you? I've never made a pack but I think it is time to try to design and sew the perfect pack for me.

Way to re-purpose materials from items no longer used. Kind of like a small volume pack crossed with a ribz pack.
