I’ve recently revamped my winter daypack with a critical eye towards an unplanned night out. I ditched my AMK Thermolite bivy and “sportsman” blanket and replaced them w/ my eVENT bivy and a custom down half bag (elephant foot bag) from Hammock Gear, so thought I’d give it a go. The weather was calling for mild day and nighttime temps (which is good weather to experiment in!)
I’ve upped my winter daypack from 25 liters to 35 liters, but stuck w/ the same basic pack- Patagonia Ascentionist- I like the simple, no frills pack, it’s a sturdy pack, but still pretty lightweight
I was also giving some MSR Shift snowshoes (youth sized) a try. I wanted something lightweight for trips where they might be residing on your back more than on your feet. I was pleasantly surprised how well they did on our current snow, mostly wet and packed.
the snow depth where I ended up was only 1.5-2′, so I opted for a debris shelter (that I would cover w/ snow) vs a snow trench
framed up
I used a 5×8′ tarp a 7×7′ or 7×8′ would have been more suitable
I carried a 30″ section of z-lite pad, used as a quasi frame and also a 1/8″ 20×60 ccf pad
my half bag and down parka
shelter is done
supper on w/ an impromptu windscreen
dessert- man that is good stuff- dark chocolate w/ a kick!
view from the porch
a fabbed up a little holder for a UCO candle, had to move it to the side as it was dripping on the bivy- worked well, but the wind was blowing so hard it would eventually work its way in and snub the candle out
you can see the contractor bag and my pack behind me blocking the “door”, it could have been blocked better as the wind would work it’s way in
temps only fell into the mid 30’s and I was very snug; if I had to guess I’d say I’d be comfortable to maybe the mid 20’s
I think for “normal” winter day trips I’ll be adding down booties, a down vest and some lwt fleece bottoms
anywho, pretty happy w/ the kit and yet another good reason to get out in the hills :)
