Need some suggestions for spring break with my 8 yr old. We're thinking either Smokies or Red River GOrge in KY, and note this is not epic mileage backpacking, but more keep the kid from whining and enjoy himself. I think what drew me to RR Gorge was a suggestion from people we had met, and I had stumbled upon some backcountry cabins that could be rented.
If we do Smokies I think I'd take a similar approach, with car -camping amenities and do dayhikes.
Thanks for any ideas.

Popular=crowded.
Have you been to Big South Fork? Waterfalls and arches, several short "high reward" destination hikes, and no crowds.
Honey Creek loop and Twin Arches loop(especially by way of Slave Falls and Needle Arch) are spectacular dayhikes.
Yahoo Falls and Yahoo Arch on the KY side are worth a visit, and especially convenient if you're coming in from the north.
Pickett State Park is a good place to camp for the Twin Arches loop, and has a natural bridge and large cave right off the highway, and "Arch Lake" where an arch forms a bridge to an island just a few minutes walk from the campsites.

I'm with Owen on the Big South Fork and Pickett – lots of great options with kids. Its also a fun paddling destination; Pappa Smurf at Sheltowee Trace outfitters can set you up for a fun paddle.
If you do RRG, I would consider hiring a climbing guide – very kid friendly and lots of fun climbing.
As an alternative to the Smokies, consider Slickrock – no permits, no crowds, but plenty of old growth forest, streams, and balds.
