I am planning to hike the Pinhoti Trail from Flag Mountain, Alabama. While consulting my maps I noticed that you have to hike a good distance from Flag Mountain before you actually enter the Talladega National Forest (TNF). The hike before entering TNF seems to go along roadsides and across some private lands. It also seems that a couple of nights camping could be required before reaching TNF. If this is the case how does that work for the private lands and the roadsides? Also, does anyone know of any maps or guidebooks for the Pnhoti Trail?

Thanks,
Jambeaux

Thanks for the info. Ever since I got David (Awol) Miller's AT Guidebook I tend to judge all others by it.

I know what you mean..I have ones for several trails out west that I hope to get to one day. We passed a trailhead for the pinhoti on the paved Chief Ladiga bike trail about a mile out of the nice little campground of the same name. Near Piedmont, Al.

Yes, the Chief Ladiga bike trail crosses the Pinhoti Trail in the Pinhoti's northern part. The GA state line comes soon after.

A guidebook really would be a good idea, because you don't need a map most of the time. There's relatively few places where you can get turned around. I've hiked 90+ miles of the AL Pinhoti, and can think of maybe two or three that will get you off track for a few minutes if you're not paying attention. I haven't hiked between Flagg Mtn and the 603A TH, or above the Chief Ladiga rail trail to the GA line, so have actually never seen either terminus.
