Ronson fuel canisters are 2.75 ounces of iso-butane – might be a good size for lightweight backpacking

After years, I finally emptied a canister so I tried removing that plastic piece:

ronson

Bottom is a working canister.

Lid to left.

I tried removing the plastic piece from top canister. It deformed rim a little, then the plastic piece with spring pulled out. There was a tiny bit of butane left which immediately dissipated.

If you wanted to use this with a stove, which would have to be Roger stove, maybe you could just cut off the plastic piece to a point where it would work?

Hi Jerry

Yes, you can. If you cut off about 1 -2 mm of the white spigot (at a slight angle) AND remove the brass pin from the stove connector, you may find that the canister will work fine. The white spigot becomes the valve actuating pin and bears directly on the cam valve inside. Don't lose the screws!

Um. You might have to leave the clear plastic pin-retaining washer out completely – that depends on the diameter of the spigot.

I would imagine that the Ronson refill canisters are pricy?

Cheers

Nice description Jan

2.75 oz Ronson canisters are $4.50 USD from amazon.com when you buy 12.

For $4.50 you can probably get a 4 or 8 ounce canister, so it's not cheap. But if you only need 2.75 ounces of fuel per trip it would make sense.

Jan is actually the one who first pushed me into looking at the spigot. Thanks Jan.

Someone else may have also helped – can't remember. It should be in the thread Jan highlighted.

Cheers
