I just swung by Walmart to pick up another of their Athletic Works polyester wicking tops that I use for my baselayer.

While I was there I found some new stuff that is very interesting.

First off, their short sleeve stuff is on clearance, including the wicking tops, down to $5 and $5.50 from $8.

Second off, they had a bunch of other Athletic Works gear:

Nice polyester 1/4 zip long sleeves. These are heavy weight (expedition) and looked very nice. They are the mock neck type. They are only $15.

Third:

Then they had a polyester hoodie. Same material as the heavy weight I just mentioned, but unfortunately no zip. If this had a zip it would be really nice. It also has a pocket on the front that its just dead weight that you could try to remove. Also $15

Fourth:

They had a really nice insulated polyester jacket. It had some kind of square grid polyester fabric on the outside. I'm not up enough on my fabrics to know what it was, but it wasn't very heavy weight and seemed really nice. I don't know what fill it had in it. Definitely some kind of polyester but I'm not sure if there is any way to find out. This was only $25.

fifth:

They also had a 3in1 parka setup for $40, didnt look at that much.

Hopefully, someone else can go and check them out and give a good report. I got a few pics from my cell phone that I can post if wanted, but I may bring my actual camera next time and take some better pictures. I might be able to buy them all and get weights if there is interest.

Here is a link to all of their Athletic Works Stuff:

I just got the bubble jacket. Size large weighed in at 21 ounces. These things are sized gigantic. I usually get by with an XXL but I needed somewhere between a Large and a Medium. I got the large, there was too much room in the chest but the medium didn't have long enough arms. It is a lightly insulated jacket (I think it says medium weight on it). It's no thermawrap, but 21 ounces isn't too bad for synthetic insulated jacket when it's only $21 online now (plus 97 cents shipping).

Wow thats cheap. I'm gonna have to get one. I think it's a great deal. If not for backpacking than at least for around town.

My store has them listed as $25 but they scan at $15.

I decided not to get one because I recently got a puffy vest and I already have a jacket, but these are a great deal at $15.

OK, that's just too cheap to pass up on :)

It's 97c to ship and it was a total of $9.59 for me.

Hi Guys! Any idea if the bubble jacket is breathable? Is there a version with a hood? I'll have to order online – closest WallyWorld is over an hour away. Thanks!

ps – online prices have dropped. polyester hoodie $8 :-) anyone know if the sizing on the poly hoodie is larger than usual as well?

I just got a Walmart bubble jacket $15, men's medium 27 oz (775g)
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=11084324&findingMethod=rr
and a woman's hooded vest, $18 (now $20), woman's Xlarge 12 oz (340g) plus 2 oz (68g) for the hood.
The vest is polyester shell, lining and insulation. The jacket is probably also polyester, but I can't find anything saying that.

Both are worth buying for street use.
For backpacking my initial impressions:
Jacket: sort of heavy but probably still lighter than the equivalent warmth of fleece. Probably all synthetic so decent for wet conditions. Too heavy. Fit is a little large. I'll probably just use it for street use.

Vest: I was attracted by the hood, but the hood is not very thick (not warm) and is attached by a heavy zipper. I might cut the hood zipper off and use it without the hood. Again, it is lighter than fleece. It is also lighter than the down vests that I have. Probably worth carrying instead of down if it's going to be wet. Woman's clothes have the zipper on backwards :(

I'll report back once I've tried them out in the cold.
