I'm looking specifically for hoodless jackets. There seems to be a "product gap" between 2 and 4 oz fill weight as exemplified by MontBell's high FP lineup:

Alpine Light: 11.6 oz, 4 oz fill (800 FP)
UL: 7.6 oz, 2 oz fill (800 FP)
Ex Light: 5.6 oz; 1.8 oz fill (900 FP)

Looking at the above, there ought to be such a thing as a hoodless jacket with 3 oz down fill at around 9 oz or thereabouts. Does such a thing exist, from any company?

Best I can tell Patagonia Down Sweater is 3 oz fill but heavier than MB Alpine Light. I know fill weight isn't the only factor but I'm persuaded by various arguments that it is probably the best single proxy for down jacket warmth. It is also the single hardest stat to find, even from most BPL jacket reviews (one more reason to love MB for providing this info).

(Hoodless because I have a down hood as part of my sleeping system. If you want context or to question my needs, see my other thread "Ditching fleece…" in Philosophy/Techniques.)

I've noticed that same gap while shopping. Recently bought a Backcountry Hadron Down Jacket spec'd at 2oz of 850 fill, since I didn't actually need more down, just the pockets, drawcord hem, and full zip.
The Feathered Friends Daybreak claims 2.8oz of 900 fill in size Medium, though, and might be something for you to look at.

Edit: Beat to the punch!

Editing again: Forgot the Marmot Quasar. I think it's ~3oz of 900 fill, but got nixed from my list because I'm short and reviews say it's quite long in the body and sleeves.
The Western Mountaineering Quick Flash and MH Ghost Whisperer should be in that ~2.5oz range if you can do with less, but were also no-gos for me due to lack of drawcord hem and odd sizing, respectively.

They don't post the fill weight of their jackets, but I think the Uniqlo jacket might work for you. They even have new water-resistant down options now.

Lukes ultralight might be a good option. 3oz of fill; 6.7oz total weight; $249.

Hey Mike, what is your chest size? I've been curious about how closely Feathered Friends' size chart, chest measurements, and reality match up.
Except for some of the more athletic cut stuff(like Arc'Teryx Cerium LT being too tight to layer under), most size Large jackets fit me fine in spite of a 46" chest. I'm 5'7", and that's getting into XXL territory according to FF!

I'm not sure but just about everything sized medium fits me pretty well if that helps?

Owen

I have the large FF Daybreak and find that it just barely fits me. I am the same height as you with a 43-44 inch chest, 190 lbs. I would think an xl might work for you. FF sizing is definitely smaller than Montbell.

"FF sizing is definitely smaller than Montbell."

I did not find that to be the case when I bought from both a couple of years ago in both the M & S sizes.

Thanks, Ross.

Billy, Montbell has supposedly changed their sizing in the last couple of years.
I'm into XL on everyone's size charts, and can comfortably wear last year's Alpine Light Down Parka in size Large over a baselayer and very thin softshell(OR Ferrosi), but people smaller than me were saying they needed XL before.
A thin fleece is still the only insulation I could actually layer under the newer one, though. R2 over baselayer is at the limit.

I have a down sweater with front pocket from GooseFeet; 3oz of down, 6.8oz total.

I have a down vest (no pockets) from Luke; great quality, and his pictures with the copper color lining are off. It looks better than the pictures.

Those would be my choices in your shoes.

Steve
