Hey guys (and ladies), i could use your help deciding on a new tent. I've been slowly moving over to the lighter side of backpacking over the last year and now am due for a tent replacement.
Here's the situation: I backpack both solo, and with my wife. Long trips (5+ days) are usually just by myself. I'm doing the JMT in July/August this summer with some friends who are beginners so we will be taking our time (9-14 miles a day) so there will be a lot of camp time. In addition, my wife is planning on joining the trip @ Keasarge pass and doing the 4 next 4 nights + whitney.
We backpack the sierras all summer, so bug protection is a must, and because I tend to be with non hike-till-bedtime people, something with views & some "liveability" is nice for 0days and rain time.
I tried the BA Scout plus UL2 last summer and was happy with it in good conditions, but it was a bit of a drag in the rain when we couldn't both sit up without touching the roof. (i'm 6'3") I REALLY liked the ease of a hybrid single wall tent though, quick set up, quick take down, no water in the tent when setting up in the rain.
SO…. I've been lusting after the new YAMA Swiftline 2p. I know i get a wicked case of gear lust though, and might be blind to other good options. I'm also a bit torn with carrying a 2p tent when it will be just me for a majority of the trail… but don't want to have 2 1p tents. Help!
