I've been to Crater Lake in Oregon several times, even once in winter; however, I have not been there this year, and the winter this year in the West is, well…um…lazy?

That said, can anyone attest to the hike-able conditions this year? It would be fun to walk the Rim Trail and I know normally you need snowshoes, for one, but perhaps this year is different because of the lack of snow.

Thanks!

I've skied around there, once. It took us exactly 48 hours from start to finish. On a normal year, the snow can pile up moderately. Some of the areas are avalanche prone. So, if this year's snow is light, you might be able to actually find a trail in places.

I was there a few weeks ago snow was 2 to 5 feet in and around the lodge… the whole rim looked the same… hiking clockwise from there a bit, very icy, needed snow shoes… you could call the rangers about the hike as a permit is needed they are very good about knowing and relaying conditions, as opposed to some stations…

I did it. It's fun! Seen vid of it socked in with clouds… Not pretty. We got blessed with three bluebird days. Beautiful!!! One of our coolest trips. Snow shoes are what we used but I'd try it with micro spikes is something. It's really crusty. Snow shoes were cumbersome and annoying. And slow. Some ski. Metal edges I would presume would be needed. Avy section is like 100 yards long.
