JasonKlass uses paper-thin aluminum tea light candle holders for his alcohol “stove”. Alas, the most popular kind that one finds everywhere only has a half-ounce capacity.

I know that bigger tea light candles exist, but I can’t find them in stores, and online sites only sell them in bulk.

Does anyone know where to buy them at retail? For comparison:

1. Popular kind – 1.5″ x 5/8″
2. 7-hour – 1 11/16″ x 3/4″
3. 12-hour – 2.25″ x 7/8″

I am interested in #2 above.

I'm pretty sure I found the bigger ones in a 3 or 6 pack at Wal-Mart way back when…

You might also call, say, a hobby-lobby or other hobby store in your area.

I thought you posted a picture of your alcohol stove set-up made from wire cloth inside and an Ikea tea candle?? I just checked that thread and the photos are not there now. If my memory is failing please let me know. I was planning to drop by my local Ikea soon to shop for the that candle to make a new stove. All of my homemade stoves are from soda cans and 5.5 oz juice cans and wanted to give the chimney style a try. Please let me know if your stove you referred in the recent thread was not made from the above materials.

I just rechecked the thread and found your post and photos. Sorry! Any advice re that Ikea/wire cloth stove is appreciated. I will be using it, most likely, with an Evernew .9L or Walmart grease pot. If you prefer, just pm me so as not to clutter this thread. Thanks

John:

The IKEA tea candles have a volume of 2.7 ounces — practically the same as my cat food can stove shown below:

I'm hoping to make a similar stove using a tea light candle holder sized between .7 to 1 ounce.

Or if your Wallie World has a fabric/craft section check there.
I see them up here, Ben.

…of course I also am at the fabric stores often ;-)

Hi Sarah:

I checked Michaels but they didn't have it. I even checked my local "party" store — also negatore.

Folks always brag about finding silnylon fabrics, etc. at Wal Mart — my local Wal Mart carries none of that stuff. I'll keep my fingers crossed and drive over there later today and see if they might carry medium sized tea light candles. Wish me luck. :)

Well, if you cannot find them, let me know! I can always send you some…and speaking of stuff…I found pint bags up here finally! (Little things excite me..lol!)

Hey Ben… if memory serves they weren't by the other candles at Walmart… I think they were in the housewares / hardware area (like by the lightbulbs and stuff) or maybe in the outdoor area (sleeping bags and stuff)

Just came back from Wal Mart and Target — and found only the small size. :

Why not make your own candles in cat food cans (or what you like) with a screen stand made to fit? All you need are wicks and wax. You could make 3-wick candles and really ramp up the heat output.

Ben, I think, is looking for the tea candles for the holder not the candle

You've already discovered that chain outlets don't carry the same merchandise in all stores. That noted, I can confirm that Michael's, Ikea, Hobby Lobby, and similar craft stores have all at one time or another sold the size candles you want; the trick is either to check back regularly (especially in fall and winter), or ask management to order some for you. And as one of the other commentators noted, you might do better making your own. Best of luck in your search.

yeah, I can't find them either. I was looking for something larger than the 16ml I get out of the regular mini tealights so I could boil 3 cups in my Heineken pot. The best thing I was able to come up with so far is using the bottom of an 8.3oz Red Bull (or the small 5oz v8 drink) can. I cut it down to size so it holders about 29ml and I fill it to about 25ml to boil 3 cups. Let me know if you find "the real thing" I'd be interested to try those out instead.

My red bull one is closer to your #2 above. Little bit smaller width but not much. It's just under 2 1/8" and I made the height just enough to hold the amount I need to boil 3 cups.

Interestingly enough I can get 3 cups to a rolling boil in 9 minutes with it, which is quite impressive for me as compared to the mini tealight.

Ben, I have to agree: I have seen these stupid candles many times, and yep, suddenly I cannot find them anywhere! I have been to countless stores here and no luck so far…sigh!

Sarah:

Thanks for your effort. I really appreciate it.

Jason Klass sent me some wedding tin cans. At 1.25 oz. capacity, they are pretty darn close to the correct size — and significantly smaller than a Fancy Feast cat food can. I’m happy now. :)

And best of all, you won't have cougars rubbing against you while your cooking ;-)

Hehheh ;-)

I may have found some medium lights at the Dollar Tree yesterday, although they kind of actually look like your "wedding tins".

Dollar Tree medium lights?

Below that is my new experimental secret weapon. At a local grocery store, I found a 2tbs 1/8 cup (30ml) coffee scoop made by "good cook". It was about $1.30.

It is stainless steel and has a handle which I was pretty easily able to break off. It weighs 6 grams without the handle and is 1 11/16" wide by 7/9" tall.

Jeremy:

My wedding tin can measures 2.125" D x 0.6875" H. While I am happy with it, I am always on the lookout for something lighter — and especially something with a smaller diameter, but taller. Can you give me the dimensions of your medium tea light? Or is it identical to my wedding tin? Thanks.

The Dollar Tree tealights are 2" wide, 3/4" height.

The coffee scoop is even smaller, and taller at 1 11/16" wide by 7/9" tall.

Jeremy – Thanks for the tealight measurements!

I am going to hunt locally for the coffee scoop instead. I like its narrower width.
