Some lifetime members have asked whether there is a way to support Backpacking Light again. This page provides a simple, optional way to do that.

Why this invitation exists

Recently, Backpacking Light has continued to move away from a publishing model dependent on commerce-driven revenue and toward a member-centered experience model that values consumer advocacy, user privacy, and education.

We are reducing our dependence on third-party advertiser tracking systems, programmatic network advertising, and affiliate-driven revenue volatility. At the same time, we are investing in our own native site experience: new apps, better search, better article discovery, improved community infrastructure, cleaner advertising systems, stronger privacy practices, and a more durable publishing platform.

This work is already underway. This spring, we launched TRIPS, built new forum features, developed a custom site search engine, and divested from all third-party user tracking platforms. Learn more here.

These changes are intentional. They reflect the kind of membership platform we want Backpacking Light to become: more independent, more technically capable, more respectful of member privacy, more transparent, more committed to consumer advocacy, and less dependent on revenue systems that can distort editorial priorities.

These changes also come with material costs, with longer-term ROI than advertising and affiliate marketing – that is the context for this private invitation.

What this support helps sustain

A voluntary stewardship contribution helps support the infrastructure behind Backpacking Light’s ongoing transformation:

  • Enterprise hosting to accommodate a faster and more capable user experience.
  • Expanded site search and discovery tools.
  • Hardening our privacy-respecting site architecture.
  • Independence from all third-party ad networks and tracking systems.
  • Continued investment in technical education, editorial work, and community infrastructure.
  • New tools and apps for trek planning, research, skills learning, and content discovery.

This contribution supports the foundation we are building for the next phase of Backpacking Light.
