Not all carbon fiber tent stakes are created equal. Designers don’t understand the relationship between bending stress, tube diameter, and wall thickness, and end up selecting a tubing type that’s not appropriate for use as a tent stake. In addition, a carbon fiber tent stake must be reinforced at its head and tip end if it’s to be as durable as possible. Done right, carbon fiber stakes can save a lot of weight – especially if you require a stake kit of 8 to 12 (or more) stakes for your shelter and guylines.
@Stakes (“At Stakes”) adds a new twist to the carbon fiber tent stake with some functional style in the form of high-visibility (or glow-in-the-dark) heads and integrated head loops for easy extraction. Our favorite stake in their line is the 6″ Night Vision (glow-in-the-dark) High Stake (high stakes have integrated extraction loops). A full set of 8 stakes weighs less than an ounce – incredible!
Limitations: Carbon fiber stakes have their limits. Don’t expect them to be durable enough for rocky conditions above the treeline. They are an excellent choice, however, for thru-hiking the AT or other environments where you’re camping in forests with ultralight shelters.
