Three season being at or below freezing with some precipitation:

09.60   SLD Streamliner with Ridgeline, continuous loops at each end

02.75   Qty. 2  Five foot kevlar tree straps with ten foot Hammock anchors

08.00    Hammock Gear Cuben 4S with Doors

01.60   DutchStingerz Tarp Ridgeline+ Qty 4 Ti tent stakes

    17.50   EE 30* Revelation

    09.30   Tewa Breeze UQ(with overstuff)

    48.75  Total Ounces

This does the trick for hanging in the woods after a day of trail miles.  What do other people use for a light weight system?  What kind of conditions do you hang out in?  Did I miss anything?

    For temps around freezing:

    Western Mountaineering Summerlite: 19 oz

Montbell Mirage Down Jacket: 12.7 oz

Borah Gear Down Pants:  6 oz

    Neoair Xtherm : 15 oz

That makes 53 ounces. I get cold easily and I need to wear the down jacket and pants to stay warm at freezing and while it would be more weight efficient to carry a 20 degree bag, I appreciate the versatility of being able to adjust to variable night time temperatures and being able stay warm outside of my sleeping bag. In warmer temps I can ditch the down pants or down jacket (possibly bring a lighter down jacket).

edit: just realized this is the hammock forum, sorry about that.

Being from Florida my 3 season kit wont take me to freezing, so this is my winter kit into the low 20’s

    11.7oz Dream Hammock Darien 11’x58″ 1.0 Robic
10.2oz HG Standard Hex with Doors (guylines, pullouts, CR)
2.20oz Suspension (Kevlar Straps, 2 Dogbones, CF Toggles)
    1.20oz 6 Stakes, stake sack
    15.0oz Enlightened Equipment 20deg Revolt 55″
    16.0oz Enlightened Equipment 20deg Enigma
    67.1 Total oz

    @bcoop

What do you use as guylines on your tarp?  Is that 8oz including guylines?
Also how are the Hammock Anchors holding up?  Any issues with the leads and/or continuous loops compressing or fraying?  I’ve been hesitant to try them because I am unsure if they would hold up long.

I can’t hold your ground set up against you…  ;-)  I think the down pants and mirage would allow you to stay warm in camp as well, then climb into the bag when its time to sleep.  What shelter do you use, just to compare to weight to total weight. How do you like the Borah pants?

    @tlhiker

I just have some Z-Line for my guy lines, and my tarp suspension is separate from the tarp weight.  I like the hammock anchors, there has not been any compression of the loops, but there has been a little bit of fraying(not concerned though) on the leads.  I will probably use them for this season and replace for next season, that gets me 2 years of use out of a set.

    Current:

    Hummingbird Hammocks Single+: 7.72 oz
Dutch Kevlar 5′ tree huggers: 1.4 ozDutch Dynaglide whoopies with hooks: .92 oz
Dutch Argon bug sock (half nooseum): 7.9 oz
Neoair Xlite (Large, cut and resealed): 11.3 oz
Hammock Gear Burrow 20 wide: 18.7 oz
Simply Light Designs Asym tarp (Membrane Silpoly, Dutch Flyz): 6.79

    Total: 54.73 oz

New Setup (new UQ and hammock arrive in about 2 weeks!):

Darien Dream Hammock (11′, ROBIC XL 1.0, .5 nano nooseeum): 10 oz (est.)
Loco Libre Gear Habanero Underquilt (20 degree, 950 fp, .67 Argon, 45*50): 13 oz (est.)
Dutch Kevlar 5′ tree huggers: 1.4 oz
Dutch Dynaglide whoopies with hooks: .92 oz
Hammock Gear Burrow 20 wide: 18.7 oz
Simply Light Designs Asym tarp (Membrane Silpoly, Dutch Flyz): 6.79

    Total: 50.81 oz

I also have an Arrowhead Equipment Shangri La tarp for more coverage if expecting inclement weather (12.9 oz). The very last piece I will be picking up, as funds allow, is a HG CF tarp with doors @6.5 oz to replace both tarps and provide 3+ season coverage in all conditions.

It’s been a hell of a ride getting to this point with my hammock setup! My hammock setup is only 3.63 ounces heaver than my ground setup, and FAR, FAR more comfortable. After the last two pieces of gear arrive in the next couple weeks, I’ll be at around 6# base pack weight for my 3S, 3-5 night hammock setup. Besides the CF tarp, I’ll eventually get a 30 degree 950 fp Ghost Pepper top quilt from Loco Libre to replace the Burrow for 3S use, shaving about 5 oz. I’ll keep the Burrow and use it for layering the top quilts into a -10 degree, 2# solution for winter camping.

I love, love, love hammock backpacking.

I think your 10oz estimation is in the ballpark for your incoming DH Darien.  I currently have a 11’x58″ 1.0oz Robic and .5oz noseeum version, but with whoopies.  I don’t know what other options you opted for but I have underquilt hooks (hardware removed, just have the grosgrain loop), and a peak shelf, no ridgeline organizer. Mine specs out right at 11.7 in a ZPacks cuben double ended stuff sack.

The continuous loops are estimated to be about 1oz less that the whoopies per pair, and the shelf probably adds about .5 oz.

    @bcoop

The compression and fraying on the lead is what I worry about.  Ultimately for maintenance sake I keep coming back to whoopie/MSH/tree straps for simplicity and durability sake.

I live and do most of my backpacking in Pennsylvania, but I avoid the summer months as if they were “unlivable.”  The hammock weights below all include an 8 & 10 foot tree strap along with whoopie sling suspensions (I use a Marlin Spike Hitch).  Although I have a Speer Winter Tarp (21.6 ounces including guylines and 6 stakes) the weights below include my Lawson Equipment Hexalite Tarp with guylines and 4 stakes at 10.4 ounces).  I have a couple of different hammock setups depending on the lowest temperatures I’m expecting while sleeping:

    • 10-25 Degrees:  91.4 Ounces (BIAS Weight Weenie Hammock – 14.7, Speer Peapod – 39.4, MLD XP Quilt – 27)
    • 25-45 Degrees:  81.4 Ounces (BIAS Weight Weenie Hammock – 14.7, MLD XP Quilt as an underquilt – 27, BPL UL240 Quilt L – 29)
    • 45-55 Degrees:  62.9 Ounces (BIAS Weight Weenie Hammock – 14.7, Tewa Summer Breeze as an underquilt – 10.8, JRB Shenandoah Quilt – L – 18.4)
    • 55 Degrees +:  5 Ounces (Dutchware Half-Wit with 5′ Huggers and Whoopie Hook Suspension – 17.9, Tewa Summer Breeze as an underquilt – 10.8, BPL UL60 Quilt L – 12.9)

I can go as light as 45 ounces:  LE Hexalite Tarp – 10.4, GT Nano with tree huggers and whoopie slings – 10.8, Tewa Summer Breeze as an underquilt – 10.8, BPL UL60 Quilt L – 12.9, DB Bugnet – .7)

My hammock shipped yesterday. 11.25 ounces for a fully enclosed 11′ x 63″ hammock. Not bad!

    Custom Dutch Hammock = 4oz
7/64 Amsteel and Dutch Hooks and loops = 1.8oz
    WM Everlite = 14.5oz
MYOG tarp and lines = 3.4oz
Exped Air Pillow UL = 1.6oz
    …………25.3oz
Comfy for me down to 40-45 with shorts and a tshirt, lower with clothes but honestly i’m not interested in anything below freezing. I really want to be under 24oz for some obsessive reason but i am very happy with this kit (for now). I could nix the pillow but i’m only partially masochistic.

Hey Brett, I am curious about your “09.30   Tewa Breeze UQ(with overstuff)”. Is that a 9.3 oz UQ good to freezing? That seems exceptionally light to me for 32F, unless it is torso sized? But even torso sized at freezing often runs a little more than that, plus I am going to need a leg pad at those temps. I did not see a leg pad on your list, but maybe that is dual purpose so you have already counted it as your sit pad?

Anyway, I have – or at least had- a bunch of different systems with various pros/cons/weights. But how about the one I started with back in 06? Why not! Just hammock, and hammock specific sleep gear, right? We are not considering clothing worn yet, right? That can definitely be used to boost my system, but is also already counted weight wise in clothing. So this system is just for down to freezing, no cuben yet, all sil-nylon or plain nylon:

1:A Hennessy Explorer UL ( for us bigger guys, netting not removable unless I cut it off, so that is 4 or 5 oz right there) with stock ropes, huggers and tarp: about 36 oz( add an oz or 2 for cords if tying tarp to trees instead of hammock)

2: large HH Super Shelter with space blanket and 1 pad: about 22 oz

3: Golight long down TQ about 25-30F: 21 oz

    4: JRB hood 2 oz

5: 2 stakes for tarp side tie outs, though I always try to tie to trees or roots: 1 oz?

Did I include everything?  So looks like 82 oz. But I actually have one with net removed, so let’s use that one: 77 oz. I’m considering this solid at 32F, with good performance when damp or in high humidity, and the most wind and wind driven rain proof set up I have used without going to a really large tarp. But at 4.8 lbs I guess I am a little heavy compared to some of Y’all. But I don’t know if my 6’1″, 205-220 lbs would do well in some of these 7 oz hammocks or not? And I have superb wind proofing and splash up/wind driven rain/snow resistance. Plus, for just an additional 3 oz by adding the HH kidney/torso pads and wearing my warm clothing, ( or by adding any unworn clothing- if any- under the pad for zero weight) I can go well below freezing. If I have my vapor barrier clothing with me( may replace some other clothing) I have been toasty at 6F with this system(might have had a slightly warmer JRB TQ, a few oz heavier, can not remember right now). So not 3 lbs, but maybe not too bad even at 4.8 lbs. I’ll try and think which other systems I have, which need to only get me to 32F and no lower, that might be a little lighter.

It crept up to 10.4 lbs., but I carried both a Arcteryx lightwt fleece (100 wt) and MH Phantom something down hoody in the Sierra’s. Used both in conjunction with an EE 20°F quilt to sleep when the storm fronts came through with my mid, so maybe looking at a patrol shelter.

I posted this a few years ago and it is still my go to kit.

My Nano 7 hammock, dyneema whoopie sling with Dutch buckle, Papa Smurf bug sock, JacksRBetter 8×8 tarp along with cord and 2 ti stakes comes in at 1.lb 7.8 oz. Add 6.6 oz. 3.4 IX underquilt and GoLite ultra quilt at 19 oz. for 25.6 oz. of bedding. Total: 49.4 oz./3 lb. 1.4 oz. I sleep cold, but this has been comfortable down to the upper 30’s so far.
