Taking my first trip out west and hiking the Teton Crest Trail for 5 days, solo. Heading out Sept 19-23, from what I understand it should be chilly nights with the days in the 70’s and pretty dry. Looking for some input on my gear list. Let me know what ya think https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1evSFzHS2BXpLrKrhJ1AhCTHDATiefE0qqc07FgwGrIo/edit?usp=sharing
Aug 12, 2016 at 8:05 pm #3419925No news is good news I hope, but still looking for any suggestions on what people have had success with in the past or items I may need that I haven’t included. This is the biggest hike I’ve attempted so far, so I’m trying to be over-cautious
Aug 12, 2016 at 8:19 pm #3419928Your list looks pretty good to me. I would think you would see temps colder than 70’s during the day. I would guess low 60’s at 10,000ft.
One last thing, I don’t think Bearikade’s are approved for the Teton Crest Trail. You might call the ranger station though, as I have found some places will let you use a Bearikade when it isn’t immediately evedent that is is OK by looking at the canister.
Aug 12, 2016 at 8:21 pm #3419929What about navigation? Relying solely on your phone?
Aug 12, 2016 at 8:46 pm #34199330nly hat is fleece? Map? Enough water tabs? Your thoughts on bear spray?
Aug 12, 2016 at 10:31 pm #3419955Brad- I only just realized that bearikades are not igbc approved (lapse in research) I will probably opt for a bearvault 500, which won’t be a big issue because I was going to rent the bearikade
ken- i will be taking a paper topo as backup, it just  somehow didn’t make it onto my list, my watch serves a compass also if needed
BJ- I wasn’t planning on taking a hat, I never wear them except in cold weather. This is my first trip above 5000′ though and I could see how the sun might be more intense. For water tabs, 30 should give me 6L of water a day for 5 days, suppose it couldn’t hurt to toss in some extras I got laying around. On the topic of bear spray, I have been debating this one myself, didn’t wanna add the weight but being a novice to hiking in griz country tack on an extra 8 oz or so for spray
Aug 13, 2016 at 9:11 am #3419984Like I said if you want to take the bearikade you could call and ask. I found out they are approved in Wrangell St Elias even though when you look at their website it implies that only igbc canisters are approved. They even sent me a list that has Wild Ideas canisters, purple mountain engineering and several canisters that are ok even though they aren’t igbc approved.
As far as hats go if you haven’t been at altitude above tree line before the sun can be brutal. The uv rays are more stronger at altitude.
Aug 13, 2016 at 4:15 pm #3420039I am planning on doing the TCT as part of a little Wyoming ramble in late September and early October. I read about the canister restrictions in Teton NP but only a small part of the Teton Crest Trail goes through TNP. Unless I’m missing something, canisters aren’t even required unless you CAMP in those sections that are in the national park. You may want to check and see if you even need a canister or a particular type where you are camping
