I wondered if anyone knew of an alternative to the Mountain Laurel Designs Solomid (similar size/weight/quality/strength) as it hasn’t been available to order for a while?
Thanks.
Mar 7, 2021 at 6:44 am #3703021SMS Deschutes, or Gatewood cape offer similar room with similar footprint. I assume you are talking Silnylon versions? If you are wanting DCF, maybe a SO Silex, might do the trick? The Solomid XL is not much bigger, and probably the better shelter unless you are very short, but you didn’t ask that 😁

Liteway recently came out with the PyraOmm Solo, which looks pretty close to the Solomid. There are certainly differences – the PyraOmm Solo uses silpoly fabric and has #3 zippers. I’ve never used anything from Liteway.
Mar 7, 2021 at 4:03 pm #3703119Tarptent Notch Li… two for sale on gear swap now..
I also have a Tarptent Aeon Li that is slightly used that I would sell but have not listed yet on gear swap…
These two Tarptent models are not pure Mids, but the stays at either end give more head and foot room at the ends… the design is essentially a modified Mid… some would say improved because it eliminates some of the low angel space at both ends… but, of course, every design has it’s pluses and minuses…
Mar 7, 2021 at 6:20 pm #3703143Gatewood Cape is pretty nice. Here is my first night sleeping in it. I do have the Serenity inner net but decided to use my bivy instead. There is a lot of room under the Cape.. for all my winter gear and myself.
Mar 9, 2021 at 9:21 am #3703388About the pyraomm linked above, “We recommend using this shelter if you are no more than 175 cm tall. For larger growth, the shelter may not be convenient. If your height is more than 175 cm, we recommend choosing other versions of PyraOmm: Duo or Plus.”
Mar 9, 2021 at 11:10 am #3703406The Locus Gear Khufu is very similar: https://locusgear.com/items/khufu-sil/?lang=en. However, their website shows a 3 month lead time.
Mar 14, 2021 at 12:19 pm #3704554Thank you for suggestions.
Khufu is too big. PyraOmm Solo Is too small (I am ~180cm). I prefer silnylon, so Tarptents are a bit too heavy.
I actually have the non-cape version of the Gatewood Cape (name escapes me).
Basically I am looking for something more rectangular as the wide ends are hard to get taut enough that they don’t flap into my face (and impossible with moderate or stronger wind).
I considered Deschutes, it looks bigger, so might not flap in my face.
Solomid appears a better size for me, narrower on two sides, probably a bit more durable as it is smaller.
So I might just wait. Picky customer, but I really appreciate the suggestions, thank you.

Mar 14, 2021 at 6:12 pm #3704600Jerry, I agree. MYOG worked has worked out well for my personal pyramid dimensions of ~100×60.

I’m assuming you made the mid? Looks good from what I can tell looking at the one pic. Would sure be nice to see some more photos. Weight? Material? Inquiring minds want to know.
Mar 15, 2021 at 6:50 pm #3704836I’m curious too, Eric. Looks awesome.

Sorry for thread drift!

Cheers
Mar 19, 2021 at 10:15 am #3705367One thing about the latest Solomids .. wasn’t one end was somewhat offset for a better user experience?

An X-Mid sounds perfect for you.
