Anyone with experience with the splitwing bundle? Such as storm worthiness, durability, ability at keeping out water. Looks like a solid tent, like some feedback before I drop 400 on it. Sub floor probably needed, still that would make 28 ounces. I like the small footprint on it. Like Takoe rim trail next year with Colorado following that
Hey Dale,
Bought the Tarp, Vestibule, Floor threesome a couple years ago. Went without the inner netting as I use a Borah Bivy if needed for the bug protection. I sleep without the tarp on all nights but those with precipitation and enjoy cowboy camping as much as possible. Tim at SlingFin had just finished building a tarp and it came out to 7.6oz. That, with the vestibule at 1.9 and the footprint at 3.2 came to 12.7oz. Paired with my Borah Bivy, the whole setup came to 18.5oz.
The tarp was an easy setup. What’s more is that on two nights I was out, I went to sleep without the tarp up and woke up to a few raindrops on the Bivy and was able to throw the tarp up covering my bag/gear in about 30 seconds. I’ve carried the tarp on the 18 night Colorado Trail and a handful of trips into the Eastern Sierra. I rode out at least two pretty violent/windy storms and stayed perfectly dry and protected.
I carry two beefier Easton 9 inch stakes for the ends, 4 MSR mini Groundhogs for the corners, and 4 more super light titanium Shepherds hook stakes for the sides for extra protection and to pull the sides out a big more to give a bit more width to the area.
I’ve really just got two shelters in my quiver. This one and a custom made Phreeranger TrekkerTent. They each do an amazing job for their weight at protecting me completely in inclement weather.
Slingfin makes bomber tents and tarps. I have both the Portal 1p and the Crossbow 2p and they look brand new after many nights of use. Fantastic company, you can’t go wrong with purchasing a shelter from them.
