Years ago I had a pair of Houdini wind pants that I wore constantly in winter, sometimes under soft-shell pants instead of long johns. They did a great job of keeping me warm in the wind and weighed only a few ounces. But they were noisy. Like most woven synthetic fabrics that can block wind, the Houdini fabric makes a horrible scratch, scratch, swish, swish noise when it rubs against itself, like between the thighs when walking.

So I’ve been on the lookout for silent, wind-resistant UL fabric and garments. Almost all 15d, 20d and 30d tightly woven nylon or polyester fabrics are noisy, some more than others. I’ve made a habit of rubbing these types of fabrics against themselves when handling wind layers in stores or when I get a packet of fabric swatches from RBTR and other fabric vendors.

So I was very pleased to hear nothing when I rubbed RBTR’s 1.0 oz/yard Hyper D (non-calendared) fabric against itself. Silence.

Timmermade were kind enough to make me a pair of wind pants of this fabric. They are indeed the first pair of wind-resistant pants I’ve owned that are completely silent when walking, at least to my ear.

I don’t think most people care about this, but for those that do…

A little more than 2 ounces and have been durable enough for light bushwacking. So smooth that most branches and such just slide off ’em. They will snag on thorns, as most wovens will, and can suffer a bit of weave distortion thereby. I fell through some river ice recently and they survived scraping along the ice hole during the fall without marks, and then dried super fast on the walk out. Very smooth and comfortable as sleeping pants as well.

These aren’t available to order on their site, it says “coming soon”. Is this a new preproduction pant you received?

It’s a custom order item at the moment, I believe.  I think the lead time info for such is on the homepage.

I made myself a pair of wind pants in hyperd 1.0 uncalendared. VERY useable pant although not much for weather protection. The bottoms/butt wore out extremely quickly as I wore these pants on the Long Trail and sat in wooden shelters not extremely well taken care of.. I opted for a pair of m50 momentum for my most recent pair. Not nearly as breathable but it offers better weather resistance, in lieu of actual rain pants..(in practice they still wet out quickly and you might as well go full WP/B or WP rain pant if looking for weather protection) M50 is still a bit too clammy for sleepwear though! Maybe back to hyperd in the future…

For reference, Montbell Versalite with the newer infinium fabric is still VERY clammy and not suitable for sleep wear.

Great timing of your post, ref: Hyper D. Timmer does offer a wind shell of Hyper D with all manner of custom options (zippers, pockets, drawcords, hood). Prices are very reasonable, on par with leading UL gear mfgs.

Maybe some Hyper D pants w durable fabric sections ala Fjallraven pants.

Bill, that would prob be the way to go. I was trying to get extremely light pants, but another ounce could get u durability.

Eric, yeah not super protective against rain or wind, CFM pretty high.

But good against bugs, light wind, good for sleeping and silent:)

Similarly, my friend and I got Dutch Shorts (UL laundry shorts from Dutchware that work great as UL swimming shorts for populated hot springs and such). I got Argon 90 and he got the Hexon 1.0 fabric. The Hexon is significantly quieter and is a better material for clothing IMO. HyperD is very similar to Hexon so I could see HyperD being an ideal wind pant fabric and very quiet. I’ll have to remember this when its time to order wind pants.

My friends WM down pants have a reinforced butt – I think the same would work well here. HyperD/Hexon pants with heavier butt and possibly knee sections.

Reinforcement sounds good.
And now I’m curious about 1.6 Oz HyperD. Just ordered some samples. Will report swish test results:)

Got a sample of the 1.6 oz/yard Hyper D (40 denier) and compared against the 20 denier 1.1 oz/yard Hyper D. If the quietest fabric is a zero and the loudest a ten, the 1.1 oz/yard Hyper D might be a 1/10 and the 1.6 oz/yard Hyper D a 3/10.

The ripstop yarns in the heavier stuff are just a bit more prominent and produce a louder, higher-pitched sound when the fabric is rubbed against itself.

For context, one of the quietest wind shirts I own is a 2015 Arcteryx Squamish. I would rate that one 5/10 on the scale of silence.

I think the 40d Hyper D would be pretty durable for pants. Timmermade’s design in that fabric might come out to 3.5 ounces or so. Still pretty darn light.
