Regarding the Litesmith Carbon Stakes…. I’m taking my TT SS2 fly into the Linville Gorge in NC tomorrow, along with these stakes and will personally abuse four of the 6 inch stakes and two of the longer ones. I’m hoping they rise to the occasion…they are things of beauty. Stay tuned.
Jun 18, 2016 at 7:34 am #3409526MSR Groundhog’s for anything that is tensioned/holding a tent in place, MSR groundhog Mini’s for less critical points.
Jun 18, 2016 at 4:32 pm #3409583Litesmith disclaimer – I forgot my ultralight BPL hammer but did find an ultralight rock to test the stakes.
The ground in the Linville Gorge was hard and extremely rocky and I treated the stakes as any other. 4 or 5 times pounding them in and pulling them out yielded no issues. I will continue playing and reporting the results.
Jun 19, 2016 at 9:04 am #3409646Day 2 of testing the Litesmith. Again using a rock to pound the stakes, after about 5 times one of the heads popped off of the 6″ stakes. I can insert the head back in the carbon tube and use it as a stake, and I can repair with some JB Weld, Gorilla glue, or something.
Perhaps the glue used in manufacturing these needs to be reevaluated. My 2 cents.

Jun 19, 2016 at 2:33 pm #3409686Groundhogs or minis for me as well. I have questioned the wisdom of stakes made from multiple pieces, especially tubular, after slicing my palm badly from an Easton tubular stake breaking on me while pushing into soft ground.

I might try the new msr hook stakes as they seem more durable than skewers if heavier
also got some needle stakes which work fine
;)
Jun 19, 2016 at 7:10 pm #3409729DAC J-stakes are working well for me here in the Atlantic provinces where the ground is damp loam with granite boulders hidden just below the surface where you were silly enough to want to drive a peg.
Jul 10, 2016 at 1:12 pm #3413462just a follow up ..
ive been trying out the new MSR hook stakes
http://www.campsaver.com/hook-tent-stakes
they arent exactly superlight at 13g a pop. but they are much more durable than titanium skewers, and you can step on em without any worries … ive also tapped em in with a rock with no issues so far, but i dont think theyll be as bomber as the ground hogs
however they do go into the ground MUCH easier … as a bonus they are cheap, 10$ or so for a pack of 6
not to mentioned they are anodized red
im off to MEC to buy some more today for my other tents … combined with groundhogs they should work in any situation short of loose sand/ice/snow
;)
Jul 10, 2016 at 1:58 pm #3413470eric mentions MEC enough that I’m starting to think BPL should investigate his sponsorship disclosure compliance.

That got me thinking…..on any family trip…its a 100% requirement that I bring smores….and we usually find tree branches that have a slim end where the bark has already peeled off…but for my one child who is allergic to everything, she has to just eat the marshmallows direct from the stick..and is usually sucking on the branch by the end…so…not the most hygienic.
I have some long TI skewers from Lawson…so maybe I’ll bring 1-2 of those on the next trip. I can sanitize the stake before use with the fire, but I’m trying to think of the best solution to tie the hook end of the stake to a branch for more length? It would need to be heat resistant……so glowire would be out…and a rubber band/silicone band would be too hard to use trying to connect two sticks together…
Jul 10, 2016 at 2:53 pm #3413481the mods have asked that i report those post that have no purpose other than trolling attacks against yours truly … just following their suggestion ;)
as to the mini groundhogs, im not a fan … the regular groundhogs are pretty bomber … the minis not so much IMO as theres quite a bit less metal at the head
dgoggins …
i just hold the stake carefully over the (small) fire , some metal braided wire will work attaching it to the stick if yr careful …
of course once should use bare metal (unmarked) Ti skewers for that application
;)
