I’m looking for a lightweight, waterproof container for fragile stuff like phone, car key fob, usb charge cables, etc.
What I’m imagining is a carbon fiber tube with snap on plastic lids on both ends. Think small Pringles can, only lighter and not cardboard.
Anyone seen such a thing?
Feb 8, 2018 at 9:10 pm #3517320I use a recycled plastic peanut butter container. I also use one to hold all my firemaking stuff in. They are pretty durable, and air tight.

I do understand the need to protect fragile contents, so here’s what I’ve done:
I use a heavy-duty freezer quart zip lock plastic bag.
Then, I make a “liner” for it using sort of thin bubble wrap. Sometimes you can even find little bubble wrap envelopes that fit perfectly inside a quart bag (or you can cut the top down to fit) at places like Michael’s.

Feb 9, 2018 at 1:11 am #3517365I’ve been doing something similar, and it works under normal use. What I’m concerned about is abnormal—me falling on a rock with the pack breaking my fall. It hasn’t happened yet, but it will, and I think I want something rigid. Even if the container cracks or breaks, it will absorb energy in the process.
The peanut jar may be okay.
What if I found a carbon tube just the right size for tennis ball lids, and made them to different lengths in my garage. Do you think anyone would buy them?

Feb 10, 2018 at 8:19 pm #3517673I’ll take a somewhat contrarian view to Todd, I’m not sure you’d sell very many. I think many folks just use a ziploc or opsak and find that works fine. If I were to use some type of hard case, I’d want it oblong, not circular, like a bar of soap holder – more like the shape of the phone itself.

Feb 15, 2018 at 5:10 pm #3518544The plotter at work took 36″ rolls of paper. Inside the roll, like inside a roll of a paper towels, was a tube. Instead of being heavy cardboard, it was corrugated plastic. Kind of like those political campaign and “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days” signs, but in a cylinder. It impressed me by how stiff it was for its lightweight.
Lightweight but removable end cap can be obtained by sweet-talking someone at a plumbing or electrical supply. Threaded pipe and conduit come with plastic covers to protect the threads and keep foreign materials out. Sometimes, they are also a good fit for some other tube, if the diameters match.
But, yeah, those things are particularly fragile. Find something in your kit to serve as a padding envelope. The tube I was describing would be great as a UL eyeglasses case.
Feb 15, 2018 at 5:41 pm #3518549I use a repurposed cookie butter plastic jar for non crushables. It’s the Walmart brand and has an oval profile. It also does double duty as a mug while in camp where the contents (glasses primarily) are safe and sound.
