Since my normal go to location, James Peak Wilderness, was covered in snow and I was just at LCW the previous weekend, I decided to hit a new area, Mt Evans Wilderness. I called the ranger station and discovered that snow would not be a problem – and it wasn’t.
We started Friday AM from the Deer Creek TH and climbed the Tanglewood trail from 9200 feet to 12k in 4 miles. Here is a view from the top looking south, in the direction we came from:
w
We headed towards Bear Tracks Lakes, which was a 2 mile descend from the saddle. Here is Mt Evans (14’r) in the background:
We then ended up at our destination and we were thoroughly pleased with the lake, view, and our spot for the evening:
Before it got dark I had the urge to use my Duece of Spades and when I discovered my spot to dig my cat hole, I noticed this moose and her lil baby calf. They looked at me and slowly walked away (this pic only shows the mama):
The next morning the sun was in our favor and the lake looked awesome:
As we were gathering our water at the lake, guess who decided to show up for a drink as well?
It was the highlight of the trip. To see a moose and her baby come up, provide a show, and then head off around the lake was a live Nat Geographic episode. I wanted to snuggle the lil calf but doubt mama would approve.
A little PB&J with instant curry beans for lunch:
We stopped by Roosevelt Lakes and enjoyed some catchless fishing. Got a few bites but no real luck. I did see a Golden Trout in the water that looked like an albino. Pretty cool.
Campsite night two:
Cool area. I will need to explore the northern part of the wilderness next time. And bring a fly rod.

Jul 10, 2016 at 11:18 pm #3413589That’s funny Gordon. I just saw this after getting back from a similar trip this weekend. Even stayed in the same spot at Beartracks. I’ll post something when I have a chance. Us at the spot overlooking the lake:
Jul 18, 2016 at 1:57 pm #3414867Right on Randy. Yeah, when we got to the lake you could see plenty of really nice spots just north/ east of the lake. However, I could ‘sense’ that up there on the hill the was the best one. Yep, sure was.
Jul 18, 2016 at 3:52 pm #3414887Gordon,where is that second campsite? I wouldn’t think you’d find anything even campable (is that a word?) on Tanglewood between Roosevelt and the TH. Fish were pretty active at Beartracks. Watched a fly fisherman from camp in the afternoon doing quite well. We went down at dusk and caught 3 Brookies. Buddy normally just plows into the water but he saw me rock hopping to get out to deeper water and rock hopped right behind me. That cracked me up. Saw this when we got back to camp:
We cowboy camped that night in the same spot your tent was in. I can’t remember the last time I did that. My feelings on it are, watch the sky until you’re tired then go into the shelter and go to sleep.
I knew it was going to be a good night for star watching so I thought “Why not?”, I fell asleep after 5 minutes. :) Took this first.
