While there are a number of water bottle pouches out there, I’m looking for one like that pictured below which can hold a one liter Nalgene bottle. This one was made by SierraWest; I’ve been unable to find one like this anywhere. Simple, kinda heavy, slips right on my pack waistbelt.
Oct 3, 2018 at 7:50 pm #3558278You know Eli Whitney’s insight that led to the cotton gin? That instead of removing the seeds from the fibers (as human do), a machine could more easily remove the fibers from the seeds. Cotton prices dropped, usage soared, slavery expanded, and the Civil War happened, but still, sometimes it’s a helpful inspiration.
How about attaching a belt clip to the water bottle? $4 on Amazon.
or some other style, lashed on with 100-pound braided fishing line or affixed with epoxy or duct tape (wrapped around your water bottle is a good place to store various kinds of repair / first-aid tapes). It would be less weight that the stuff sack + webbing.

Oct 3, 2018 at 8:07 pm #3558283Phillip – well, that’s easier.
I checked my stuff stack collection, and the smallest of OP’s 3-bag set:
fits a 1-liter Nalgene nicely and is 14 grams and some 2″ grosgrain (I’ve got some if you want) would add 4 grams. Or Greg offered some 1.5″ grosgrain in Make Your Own Gear recently. 2″ hip belt webbing or seat belt material would weigh more but be stiffer.
Oct 3, 2018 at 8:11 pm #3558284Thanks, @Philip. I tried all sorts of search terms but “Cargo Water Bottle Tote” never occurred to me.
@David – great idea, but I’d have to make one for every water bottle. The Tote allows me to use whatever size water bottle I want for that hike/trip – or use it for carrying other things. And I’m thinking that by the time you’ve epoxied/wrapped/taped, etc., the weight difference may not be all that much. My Gorilla tape is wrapped around my trekking poles already.Oct 3, 2018 at 8:13 pm #3558286I’m researching bikepacking gear and there are many brands making “stem bags” that are said to hold a 1 quart Nalgene. They seem to be in a 4 oz range and some have extra pockets on the outside. Not sure how straps will work best, but you will have options.
If weight is still a concern, you could of course consider Smartwater bottles that will save you a lot.
Oct 3, 2018 at 8:23 pm #3558289I have an older mesh bottle holster made by REI if you want to sew your own and copy it. If you don’t have a sewing machine I could easily crank one out. I have lots of fabrics, webbing, and hardware at home.
Oct 3, 2018 at 10:26 pm #3558302Here is a link to an OR product specifically for 1 liter nalgene bottles: https://www.outdoorresearch.com/us/en/water-bottle-tote-1l/p/2427030001222
They also do an insulated model.
If you want something more basic, google “bottle belt.” I have one of these from when they first came out 10-15 years ago. They are durable and do the job.
Oct 4, 2018 at 12:16 am #3558308Thanks for all the ideas – the bottle belt doesn’t appeal to me because I wouldn’t trust it bushwhacking through thick alder, etc. The OR tote is the closest to what I want because it can hold various sizes and types of bottles including Smartwater bottles, Nalgenes, Pepsi, pints of vodka, etc.
The pouch appeals to me because it slips on and off my pack waist belt easily and is easily accessible; I’ve tried the smaller bottles with shoulder strap pockets and didn’t like that set up.
I hunt with a Seek Outside Revolution frame and no pack bag, so no side pockets for water bottle – hanging a bottle belt off the frame will not work in the brush.
And not all the results of the invention of the cotton gin were necessarily positive…….

Oct 4, 2018 at 5:58 pm #3558391OK, this is just getting downright embarrassing – I can’t believe I wasn’t able to find these things myself. ANyway, thanks again everybody for your help
.
Oct 4, 2018 at 8:10 pm #3558402That AliExpress option Michael found is an intriguing idea – just a frame of webbing and no fabric bag. And adjustable for bottle diameter. I like that bungie around the neck of the bottle.
Done in grosgrain instead of webbing and it could be about 12 grams.
