Doug—I went to the article and clicked on the link in it and saw that layer…without even logging in.

I’m pretty sure it’s open to all, for now. I logged out of my account and it still shows up under “+Stacked Base Layer.” Scroll to the bottom of the layers under “Live Satellites” and you should see “GOES Live.” Be sure to increase the layer’s transparency for it to show up.

This doesn’t show smoke but it is an excellent interactive map from the NY Times showing where the West is burning

For those planning a trip in the Sierra: Yosemite is closed as of 5p.m. today, Sept. 17, because of smoke and poor quality. King’s Canyon and Sequoia are also closed. Check websites to learn when these temporary closures may be lifted and better air quality returns.

OOPS! That should be closure because of smoke and poor AIR quality. Yosemite has plenty of quality! but the air right now is bad enough to cause temporary closure. Hope this doesn’t ruin any plans for this weekend.

I thought you meant poor quality of visitors… :-)

It doesn’t ruin my plans since I don’t have any. I’m timid and have given up on the Sierra for this year. I might try a trip or two down the coast sometime though.

I’m  going to write up a good post trip for y’all. Presently winding down in Fresno after a 7 day solo Sierra adventure from Crescent Meadows (supposed to be 10). A bit more drama than I had hoped involving snow, heat, bears, planned off-trail, Delorme mini problems w/questionable return messaging, sliding rocks, smoke, closed trails, rattle snakes, a 22 mile exit hike for a 14 mile per day/58 year old dude, closed parks and roads, a total of 5 people seen the entire trip, a trapped rental car coated in ash…and all you can eat double-doubles once I survived the whole ordeal!  A nice relaxing vacation! Give me a week or so and I’ll fill in the details!
