G’day,
just wondering if someone could please give me an idea of the amount of fabric I would need to order to make a basic/standard 40L internal compartment rucksack. I am keen on trying one, maybe in VX21 eventually.
But after I make a 10L day pack first to get my eye in, so I am wondering how much I would need for the 10L alone as well. The 10L(app) would have no bottle pockets, no padding in shoulder straps.
Obviously I would expect some leftover. If the VX21 maybe was cheap enough I may buy the whole amount.
Delivery to Australia, but the postage doesn’t seem to prohibitive (RSBTR) so I might buy the smaller amount first and see how it goes. Just not sure of the cost until I know how much I need.
Rather than a mesh front pocket on the 40L I would look to use the VX21 as a solid pocket/panel as well perhaps. I don’t know if you can buy small amounts of tough mesh.
Ta for any help you might be able to provide
Graham
Mar 5, 2019 at 11:48 pm #3581975a liter is 4 inches cubed
40 liters is a 14 inch cube
you could probably wrap a 14 inch cube with 1 yard of fabric. It’s 54″ wide.
find a 40 liter pack you already own, measure it, see if 1 yard would be enough
maybe 1.5 yards or 2 yards just to make sure you have enough
I made a pack with 2.92 oz Dyneema. RSBTR. That worked really well. I’ve only used it on a few trips. That seems plenty robust for anything I’ll ever do. My pack is something like 40 liters. I ordered 1.5 yards.
Mar 6, 2019 at 1:20 am #3581987The amount of fabric depends on the pattern you use, size of the pack and features. If you have odd shaped panels (curves that don’t fit against each other well), expect to use a bare minimum of a yard for a small to medium backpack – two yards would be a better bet, especially if you’re making a second 10L pack too. Once you have your pattern, then you can determine your fabric needs down to the square inch (assuming no mistakes requiring a re-cut).

I don’t own a 40L and being from Oz the yards are a bit confusing -thinking in metres her Ha ha.
1.5 yards worked, that’s great to know. Do you think there would be enough leftover for a wee 10L rucksack?
The 2.92 Dyneema is that the 50D same as the HMG white model.
At a glance on RSBTR that would be 3 times (as sold by the half yard) $22US -so $66? Is that right?

Jerry’s comment and yours steer me towards two yards.
