<p style=”text-align: left;”><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>I just joined Backpacking Light, and I wanted to share my MYOG pack project with you all.</span></p>
<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>I designed my pack to use a torso length Z-Lite Sol Pad for its frame. </span><span style=”font-weight: 400;”>My main inspiration was the Pa’lante Simple Pack. However I did make a few key changes in the design of my pack, such as adding a hip belt and lumbar pad. The pad and the waist belt allow it to carry a load very nicely. I’ve done a little testing and so far have found it to carry up to 20 pounds. </span>
<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>The main body is made out of a nylon fabric from a local fabric store. I’m not certain what kind of fabric it is exactly but its fully waterproof and quite light. I think it worked out very nicely for this project. The final weight comes to 11 oz. However, the final weight will be closer to 12 oz because I am going to add some snaps on the top and some line locks to the side similar to what is on the Pa’lante pack. </span>
<span style=”font-weight: 400;”>The only other things I would do differently if I made it again would be to make the straps curved and to use a stretchier mesh on the front. Over all I’m very pleased with how it turned out and can’t wait to try it out this Spring.</span>
P.S some of the picture are posting sideways so sorry about that.

Feb 25, 2018 at 12:19 pm #3520605Shalom, What size is it. I would guess about 40L/2500ci or so. Looks good. I think you might open shoulder straps from 2.75″ to around 3.25″, the distributed load will help a bit with carrying. I also like less padding on hipbelts/shoulder straps because they stay put on your back better. The hip belt padding can be removed and a pocket introduced for a bit of weight savings. No torso strap? ‘Corse this is mostly for adjustment how the straps fit your shoulders, custom built wouldn’t need it. Good Job, overall!
Feb 25, 2018 at 2:47 pm #3520615nice job!
what fabric did you use?
does the top close? Mine is similar and I have velcro
Feb 25, 2018 at 3:51 pm #3520629James: the finished dimension are 10.5″ x 6″ x 30″ when fully unrolled, so its round 25-30 liters.
If I made another one I might make the straps a bit wider but personally I think their quite comfortable.
I decided not to make the padding removable mostly because it doesn’t make a lot of weigh savings, and also i think it make for a better and sturdier pad
Jerry: As I said above it was a fabric from a local fabric store. I got a whole roll of it when they were having a clearance sale, and I like using it for prototyping because it was so cheap. however it seemed to work out very nicely for this finished project.
thank you all for your feedback!
Feb 25, 2018 at 4:49 pm #3520640oh, thanks, I missed that
I have a local fabric store that sells outdoor fabric on discount that isn’t well specified exactly what it is, the Mill End store. I use that sometimes.
Feb 25, 2018 at 6:13 pm #3520648Nice job on the pack Shalom, and welcome to BPL too. Nice color combo on the pack by the way!
Feb 25, 2018 at 11:00 pm #3520698Looks Great!
That color combo (coyote/black is one of my favorites!)
How do yo feel about your back panel length? Waist belt appears to be a bit above your hips.
Hows the pack carry weight?
Feb 26, 2018 at 3:51 am #3520760Hi Nathan,
the back panel is 19” tall. I think it’s a good length, but I think I actually sewed the hip belt a little to high up on the panel. However in the little testing I’ve done I’ve found it to carry weight beautifully. Using the sleeping pad for a frame alows it to carry weight much better than just a soft back.
Feb 26, 2018 at 3:53 am #3520761Thank you so much Lester!
