Has this feature gone away?
Aug 1, 2018 at 12:59 am #3549290!%#&)^#$@^ !!
Aug 1, 2018 at 1:04 am #3549295So it seems. It sure would be nice to know when they’re mucking about with the site, but non-communication seems to be a BPL feature, not a bug….
Aug 1, 2018 at 1:28 am #3549302hmmm, it worked for a while, now not. They’ll probably get it to work again sometime.
you can still edit posts after the first
Aug 1, 2018 at 3:47 am #3549334Two steps back and one stumble forward
Aug 1, 2018 at 6:11 pm #3549410The reason BPL has limited the ability to edit the first post is to prevent threads from being deleted by the original poster.
Aug 1, 2018 at 6:23 pm #3549412Thanks Matthew, but I’m not sure I understand. If I started a thread, I could go back and delete the text I started the thread with, but I don’t remember being able to actually delete the thread itself.
And FWIW, I don’t recall, other than the Abela mess, anyone else trying to delete a thread (though I’ve asked Roger to delete something I started in the past). So, as has happened in the past, BPL seems to only know how to use a sledgehammer to pound in a finishing nail, making the many pay for the sins of the very, very few. With all the other places to get info/discuss UL backpacking and such, I guess I just don’t see the upside to reducing capability. Kind of a ‘bite your nose off’ thing.

Perhaps the first post could be edited for Just the first 24 hours. Or Just the first hour.
But “not at all” is regressive in many ways.
Someone needs either more caffeine or less. The current regimen isn’t getting the job done.
IMHO.
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:06 pm #3549430Disclaimer: I’m a moderator not a web programmer.
I’m pretty sure the software provides two options. This is the choice that makes the most sense so that is what is being used. My advice is to use the blank first post approach if you think you’d like to be able to edit the real first post. It may not be perfect but its quite workable.
And if you get into a pickle and need to get something edited that has become uneditable you can try PM’ing me. I’m generally happy to help out.
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:26 pm #3549435“This is the choice that makes the most sense…”
We’ll just have to agree to disagree on that…
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:34 pm #3549437+1 Doug.
The logic of encouraging a known workaround to become the standard procedure is both clumsy and baffling on the customer end.
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:38 pm #3549438Just to clarify, it makes more sense than having threads get deleted because someone is feeling destructive or mad.
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:45 pm #3549439I’m of the opinion that the destructive and mad among us should have their posts left up so they can stew in their own words and let the community see them for what they are. But that’s a whole other can of worms. Nothing personal here Matthew, just putting out some thoughts on the matter.
Aug 1, 2018 at 8:52 pm #3549440Craig, Matt is saying the poster is deleting their own threads. Black Ninja Ops, remember.
Aug 1, 2018 at 9:00 pm #3549443“Just to clarify, it makes more sense than having threads get deleted because someone is feeling destructive or mad.”
I knew what you were talking about, as did others, of course. Doesn’t change my feeling: sledgehammer, finishing nail. AFAIK, BPL is still reacting to one incident that happened a few years ago, from someone who doesn’t even post on BPL anymore (and hasn’t since his childish hissy fit). So we all ‘suffer’ diminished functionality because of one incident years ago.
And, really, I’ll bet that a competent WordPress programmer could ensure that doesn’t happen again without removing the functionality of editing first posts.
But, of course, it’s Ryan’s site and he can certainly run it any way he sees fit, I certainly understand that.
Aug 1, 2018 at 9:30 pm #3549446I guess I’m confused about what BPL is trying to accomplish or who they’re trying to stop. Deleting an entire thread vs. not being able to edit a first post seem like entirely different things. And I’m lost as to what makes the first post sacred and uneditable when the workaround is obvious and one has free reign to edit at will thereafter.
Where I come from when the policy becomes bypassing the policy, it’s time to check the premise.
Aug 1, 2018 at 10:02 pm #3549449like others have said, please allow people to edit first post. Don’t allow deleting thread.
if someone, for example, puts an incorrect directions to somewhere and someone points it out, it’s nice to fix it in the first post so it doesn’t confuse people

Just my opinion but I agree with you, Craig.
Aug 2, 2018 at 12:12 am #3549466OK. Can’t edit first post. Waste it. Start thread in 2nd post. Lose my mind over unkind posts.
Show everyone who’s boss by deleting my starting post in position #2. Duh.
Aug 2, 2018 at 12:22 am #3549468Works for me.
Aug 9, 2018 at 10:55 pm #3550717The crux of the matter is it seems most users want the ability to edit the first post. That shouldn’t be difficult to rectify. Even changing the subject shouldn’t cause a problem… on my WordPress blog I can change the title after the post has been saved and it doesn’t affect anything at all. Abela, who is a computer guru, was able to get into the back-end of the site. That hole should have already been fixed.
Given that we have to pay to post here, seems management should listen to its customers…
Aug 10, 2018 at 12:26 am #3550733My understanding is that if the user has the ability to edit the first post then they can delete the entire thread.

“THE BEATINGS WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THE MORALE IMPROVES!”
May 9, 2019 at 2:22 am #3592123Really, if Ryan would just go to the “Long Range Hunting” forums he would see how the VERY BEST forum is set up.
Leave this odd format and adopt the one used by Long Range Hunting’s forum and we would all be very happy.

How do you know?
What would make this forum better for me is the ability to upload better quality pictures. That would be nice. A lot of the “extras” that some forums have would be wasted on me.
