3.5oz WPB Bivy… wow!
Jan 2, 2021 at 2:53 pm #3691826Bob,
Thanks!! The aluminum version is made from 24ga. and the “speed holes” are formed using dimple dies. They add strength and drop weight. The plastic one is made from .0625 UHMWPE. I am using some dyneema rope threaded through pex tubing but I am going to get some carbon tubes instead. The pex has too much flex in it. For a harness im using the waist belt off my Zpacks ark haul it has a perfect reinforced section in the back to feed the rope through. They both track ok until you side hill. I am planning on taking the aluminum one and bead roll form some grooves in the bottom. The UHMWPE im experimenting with welding round rods to the bottom. Hope that answers your questions. Tom
Mar 5, 2021 at 11:22 am #3702826Tom can you comment on the breathability of this particular WPB DCF? Or if anyone else has experience with it, I would be curious to know how it might work for a waterproof breathable bivy.
I feel like I’ve seen mention of Gossamer Gear and Borah Gear experimenting with it for this application but obviously nothing has come to fruition. Dave @ Oware using it in 2012 kinda drives home the point… Does it work?

My testing has been limited to a below zero trip into the Bob where it worked flawlessly and a recent trip to the high desert in socal where it also worked well. I will be experimenting with it extensively in the next coming months in a more moist environment. I will report back when I have more data to provide. I see no reason why it would not work well for a bivy.
Mar 8, 2021 at 8:56 am #3703220I really like the overquilt. Looks perfect for winter use. I wish I was a better seamstress.

Thanks! It works well in winter. Hopefully it works well for the BMO this year also. I’m no seamstress but my wife is thankfully. She cringes every time she hears me say “how hard do you think it would be to………..” hahaha
Mar 8, 2021 at 6:24 pm #3703323Sounds good, Tom. Look forward to hearing more of your adventures, especially if it goes with you on the BMO.
Just noticed your profile pic – I used to have one of those!
Jun 8, 2021 at 9:05 am #3717731Unfortunately I did not use the bag for this years open for a variety of reasons not related to the bag. Instead I used this https://bedrockandparadox.com/2020/04/13/the-bob-bag/ and it worked flawlessly
