Both my Scarp 2 and Moment DW flys can be pitched W/O the inner tent. Most newer double wall tents these days can do this.
The fly makes a fast-to-pitch "tarp" that is usually quite wind-worthy. Yeah, most require that you carry a pole or two but some, like the TT Stratospire 1 & 2 only need your hiking poles.
What about those times when you want to pitch a flat tarp high and wide, as a sun shade, or to allow standing room underneath if there is gentle rain falling straight down? or mostly vertical as a wind blocker?
I have a big 10×12 hex tarp that came with a hennessy hammock. It's really too heavy to not get laughed at here (24oz!) But we always bring it group camping as a big awning tarp..
