I guess we could all jump in a car and knock on someone's door.
"Yo Dude! You going to look at your website at any point in the next 15 years?"
Dec 31, 2014 at 7:07 am #2160393Here's one of many reasons the fact that BPL isn't resolving this issue is so incredibly stupid. It stands to reason that the website and the advertisers will monetarily benefit if they actually post ads relevant to backpacking that people will actually *gasp* click on a buy stuff from! If I wanted a mail order bride, I wouldn't go to a backpacking site to find one.
If you want to quickly go from rated Pg13/R to XXX in a single click… Click on one of these links. I was showing this stuff to my wife last night to explain why the "meet Asian ladies" picture I posted was in our cloud, clicked on the Sugar Momma link and there's an animated gif of a half naked woman performing oral sex. I'm not kidding.
Ryan, it's time to wake up, respond to my ticket, and fix this once and for all. BPL is a repository of a lot of valuable information. Every day you ignore this, you're doing a disservice to the hundreds (if not thousands) of people who have invested their time and made this website what it is.

#1044 inappropriate ads
Please eliminate all advertising relating to dating, sexual innuendo, and implied sex.
BackpackingLight is an embarrassing and potentially damaging site to share with others or in public places.

Thanks.

Uh oh, with all this talk of flagging of late, now we're going to get ads about naughty flogging most likely… "Sugar Mommies that will also flog you, click now".
Edit to add, though i'm joking around in the above, i do agree with others here that all the sexualized ads aren't necessary and detract some from the quality of the forum here.
Jan 2, 2015 at 5:29 pm #2161003I don't need a "Sugar Mommy(?)" …..
Seems like a number of you have opened a ticket with BPL and nothing appears to have changed.
A little earlier I noticed an "x" on the top right corner of the ad; I clicked it hoping it would go away and was given the option to report the ad as either irrelevant, or inappropriate or some other option. I chose the "inappropriate" but "irrelevant" would address this for me also.
Has anyone else done this and do we know who gets that info? Is there hope for any action by reporting the ad, versus asking BPL to do something about it?It's not huge deal to me, but it seems so out of place on this forum and since a number of people object to it, I would think we should be heard at some point.
Edited to change the title of my post, as not to invite even more weird stuff..
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:03 pm #2161009Kat,
I tried that a few times without success. The Sugar Momma ad seems to be universal, but best I can tell, the other ads are random and target us individually.
The all knowing all seeing infallible internet has determined that I like either Asian or Russian ladies. Nick is receiving ads for French ladies.
Fwiw my wife is a blonde hair blue eyed steak and potatoes gal from Illinois.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:30 pm #2161015Ok after posting the last response, there's a Russian Ladies ad at the top of the page for me.
so the next sentence… Er… Random words in no particular order is an experiment. Here it goes….
Truck stop Martian loose morals little person lederhosen.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:30 pm #2161016Please feel free to flog or flag my last few responses.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:33 pm #2161017"Truck stop Martian lose morals little person lederhosen."
^^^^ Isn't that the custom ad that appears for Doug???
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:34 pm #2161019No Martians
.
..
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:35 pm #2161020Wow dude!
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:39 pm #2161021Oh it's non stop. Here's what's up now
The last Asian ladies ad was for Thai women. Now they're seeing if I prefer the Philipines.
.
This one shows up from time to time…
..
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:44 pm #2161024The ad blocker I thought was not working…must be in this case, at least somewhat.
They think I want a sugar mommy but that I also have lots of money to go on fancy cruises to Europe.Jan 2, 2015 at 6:45 pm #2161025So yeah, no surfing BPL anywhere where someone can shoulder surf.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:47 pm #2161026Really. That's unfortunate.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:51 pm #2161027I installed Weblock for iOS and it works well, as long as I'm on WiFi. It does not block ads via cellular yet. It does its job on most websites with no more setup than setting the wifi http proxy to auto, and pasting the Weblock url into the url window. It,takes a second to figure out what that all means, but then you are set.
Jan 2, 2015 at 6:56 pm #2161029You're lucky, all I get are ads for Metamucil and AARP….
Jan 2, 2015 at 7:30 pm #2161040For iOS, try the Mercury Pro web browser, available on the app store. It has AdBlock built in (but it's off by default, you have to go to settings and turn it on). Works great.
Jan 3, 2015 at 1:57 am #2161095I have AdBlock Plus on Chrome. I see no ads on any site. Kind of pathetic to receive no response from the staff in over 2 months though.
Jan 3, 2015 at 5:13 am #2161102Let's face it, this website is simply a way to support income. If that client has prepaid for those ads, BPL will not be changing anything.
Jan 3, 2015 at 7:04 am #2161111Problems are never solved by BPL in these forums.
I'm thankful for Adblock. But have you all noticed the link ads to Amazon in the forum thread like the old gearbuyer ones?
Jan 3, 2015 at 7:25 am #2161117They aren't solved by opening tickets either.
Was told no advertisements for Lifetime members yet here they are. Was told by Ryan in another thread that he'd get rid of innapropriate ads yet here they are.
Yes I can pay for and use an inferior web browser with ad blocker on iOS but why should I have to do such a thing on a backpacking site? One that I already paid membership dues for?
Jan 3, 2015 at 7:37 am #2161122Go to http://www.paddling.net and the advertisements are germane to canoeing / kayaking
.
Hard to see on iOS but the ad which you can opt out of if you make a yearly donation is for a shuttle service.
.
Here's the ad hidden in the upper right corner.
.
Same thing for hammock forum, a descendent of white blaze.
.
It's difficult to see it but the ad is for ripstop by the roll.
What advertiser in their right mind would want to advertise here at BPL when everyone is using an ad blocker in order to not see the all the trash?
Edit damn fat thumbs and autocorrect.
