I'm taking one with me on the JMT in 3 weeks. I'll report back how it goes. I was going to use it with a DSLR weighing about 3.5 lbs, but I've decided to just take a Sony Nex ~1 lb now. The tent pole that comes with it buckled alot under the dslr and while it didn't necessarily move once it was settled, it didn't seem all that stable.

Oops! Edited my last response to reflect $40, not $4. Wishful thinking on my part.

    Andy,

I look forward to hearing your review!

That was my first go with it. It took about a 1 min to set it up(getting the poles the right length). I'm going to use it on the Laugavegurinn trail next week while I'm on the trail and use the 3 Legged Thing for when I'm driving around Iceland. I'll have a writeup when I get off the trail.

I ordered one about a week ago, and it arrived today. I got the custom, ball head, 3rd leg, and I phone holder, for $100. Haven't weighed it, but it's light. My serious photography friends laugh at it, saying "just buy a real tripod." Their tripods cost $800 and weigh 2.5 lbs. one doesn't hike, the other is not ultralight. Compared to the current tripod I take (none) this looks pretty good. It might not be optimal in strong winds, but its better than nothing.

Mine weighs 8.1 oz (custom, ball head, third leg). My iPhone weighs 5.8 oz. for my compact camera or iPhone, it should be perfectly adequate.

In regards to wind, just hang a stuff sack full of rocks from it and the stability will go way up. It still won't work in super strong wind, but I do night photography and require the camera to be completely still for a couple of hours and have had no issues (other than one night that was so windy I couldn't sleep and just hiked back to the car at midnight).
