I got some Philmont meals for our troop to use on a campout this weekend. One of the meals has the dehydrated Apple Cobbler. There is a package of apples and sauce, and then another packet of breading.
The instructions say to add the apples and sauce to water and then bring that to a boil, and then simmer for 5 minutes. Then it wants you to add water to the breading mix and then spoon that over the apple mixture in a "greased" pan and heat over low heat for 5 minutes.
This sounds waaaaaaay too complicated for the freezer bag method of cooking we're trying to teach. How did you guys cook this cobbler dish?
Mark,
Rehydrate in one bag with the appropriate amount of water and call it a day. It will be gone before you know it. Don't over complicate this stuff. Use the K.I.S.S. system and you can't go wrong.
Good Luck!
Glenn
We did just exactly what gleen said last summer and it was very good. We did take a few 1 gallion freezer bags with us. just mix it all with hot water and let it set. Even the ranger was impressed at how good it was. dave
Thanks guys. We did just what you suggested… one cup of boiling water mixed in with both the apple pack and the breading pack. Let it rehydrate 8-10 minutes and we got a delicious apple glop, lol.
The boys did it. I didn't watch. Worked great.
Do you have to use the Philmont food? If not, take a look at Sarah's really good apple crisp recipe here:

If you have to use Philmont food, then at least her recipe will give you an idea on how to put it together, which is pretty much what the others have said.
