Has anyone hiked the PCT South of Carson Pass? I'm curious about snow on the switchbacks descending the East face of Elephant Back.
What about the PCT North from Sonora Pass?
Looking to guide a couple of trips in the area and want to know conditions.
Thanks,
Red Leader
Jul 20, 2010 at 7:26 pm #1630864I just finished a trip last weekend from Echo Lake south to Sonora Pass. The worst of the snow we encountered was on Elephant Back: http://photos.landeland.com/4753685#imageID=105175279 . There were also a handful of smaller snow drifts to walk over from the Carson valley up to Sonora Pass. A pair of trekking poles (or a pair shared between folks) are highly recommended for these sections.

Thanks for the timely reply. Perhaps the snow will be less an issue by our August 5 start.
How was the snow on the North face of Raymond Peak? In 1995 (another heavy snow year)we had to climb across a gully, below the trail, to get past an ice dam that completely blocked the trail.
