Just figured since I've never posted my quilt handi-work here, I'd post some pics. So that you guys don't think I only do coffee gear. ;)
I've made a number of quilts for myself and been doing some custom work for people.
Here's the last two, both in 1.1oz ripstop with 800fp down. Omni-tape and draw string footboxes.
The first one is a regular size, half taper, (72x50x34) 30deg, 1.25" baffles with 2" minimum loft, 2.5-3" in the footbox, total wt 15.8 oz:
The second one was for a BPL member, larger sized.. (76x56x38) straight taper, 1.5" baffles with 2" minimum loft, also overstuffed (~3") footbox and collar. All olive fabric, and I added a snap above the omni-tape to reinforce it:
Final wt on this one was ~17.5oz
I'm working on one right now for a giant sized south bound thru-hiker (starting late june), that'll be 35deg sew-thru a-la WM highlite (which I used for a couple years), that I'll be putting a baffled footbox in. Cold feet was the only issue I had with the highlite down around 35deg.
I'll post pics of it when I'm done.
Have some 900fp down coming, hope to make super light summer quilts with that and 0.9oz ripstop. Any input on what would be ideal for these?
;)
May 27, 2010 at 6:49 am #1614434Nice looking quilts Javan. Those caffeinated binges of french press construction had to give birth to more gear making. It's only natural. Quick question:
On your foot box, does the omni tape hold the pocket closed adequately? As far as the draw cord goes, are you using a plug? I think I'm going to buy a Ray Way kit and play around with the foot box in a similar vein to yours or MLD spirit quilt. I like the velcro better than the snaps on theirs though. Thanks.(If you could post a pic of the footbox unfolded, that would be cool too:)
May 27, 2010 at 10:53 pm #1614739The omni tape will hold as long as something doesn't jar it from the top, however this is only an issue if you don't have a snap or button above it.
Snaps or buttons reinforce it enough to keep it closed with zero fuss. Omni tape has a weak tear apart compared to most of the regular velcro I've seen, but I guess that's just it's nature. You also wont ever have to worry about ripping your bag about at the zipper.
I like it personally, with the addition of a snap or button above it.
I don't have any of the quilts I've made on hand, but I'll take a photo of the opened footbox when I finish one tomorrow. It's just flat across though, with a draw string lock at the middle.
