Anyone else having trouble with page loading today? Took 30 seconds for this page to load and sometimes I get a server issue page instead.
Nov 15, 2015 at 5:06 pm #2238307Yes, I have been having trouble all day. Most of the day (until just now) it would not load at all. I have been getting a "website not available" page all day.
Nov 15, 2015 at 5:32 pm #2238310Same here. Could not load it a few hours ago, then later on it took sometime to do so (I have ADSL) then died again. Now seems to work again. I hope this is not going to become the slow death that happened at Backpackers when they "upgraded"
Nov 15, 2015 at 5:57 pm #2238314Yea. Seems OK now.
Nov 15, 2015 at 6:20 pm #2238319it sucked majorly today :)
Nov 16, 2015 at 12:19 am #2238382Why do we need to go through this every couple of years? Many web browsers will (rightfully) warn you not to trust this web site as you login. Dear BPL admins: Have you heard of electronic calendars with reminders? They're quite handy, invented in the 1970s, you should consider trying one sometime. — Rex
Nov 16, 2015 at 8:03 am #2238415The copyright is also expired. In 2014. I signed up as a beta tester for the new site. Haven't heard back either way. That kind of thing too needs working on. A communication company that can't communicate. WTF
Nov 16, 2015 at 8:46 am #2238427Every site I go to regularly has outages or slowness at times, including yahoo and google. Go for a hike : )
Nov 16, 2015 at 8:54 am #2238433Hi Jerry. You blame Obama don't you?

Nov 16, 2015 at 11:36 am #2238473I am retired after many years of running servers for other people and from that experience I'd be surprised (shocked!) if BPL is running their own servers. If I'm correct then they probably would not be the ones updating or even acquiring the certificate. After the first couple certificate expirations we got pretty good at not letting that happen but we often inherited systems from other admins and there is no limit to people's creative capacity to set things up so that it is very hard to know just what is in them. Our content customers sometimes didn't know what a certificate is, much less that they had some. That said, this isn't the first time that it has happened here and there's no excuse to let it happen again. The copyright is also expired. In 2014. BPL, being responsible for the content, is on the hook for that.
Nov 16, 2015 at 11:53 am #2238478Says it all!
Nov 16, 2015 at 12:30 pm #2238489who cares, BPL 2.0 is going to launch soon enough that fixing this site can wait a little longer. I think it's important to get bpl2.0 ready for the holiday orders for the backpacking and pack rafting DVDs.
Nov 16, 2015 at 12:32 pm #2238490Watch out how you throw that word upgrade around.
Nov 16, 2015 at 12:41 pm #2238494Oh. The new BPL site will be live soon., I see BPL is careful to avoid the word upgrade.
Nov 16, 2015 at 2:05 pm #2238511It is version 3.0 Remember the old version? This version is ten at least. Then there is this "We introduced a limited forum discussion interface in November 2003, for the sole purpose of offering readership the opportunity to provide useful commentary on issues and topics published in articles at BackpackingLight.com. We really enjoyed the reader feedback, were very pleased by your levels of insightfulness and personal resonsibility, and we'd like to move forward with more comprehensive discussion forum topics." And this here
