Someone has several Feathered Friends kids bags listed on ebay. I'm considering getting one of these, especially considering the $100 price, but am comparing it to the kids quilts from Enlightened Equipment. The FF is about 12 oz heavier, but does have all the benefits of a bag over a quilt (full zipper, hood, etc.) The FF is 1lb 12oz, and comparable 20* EE quilts tend to be around 16oz. Thoughts? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Childs-Premium-Down-Sleeping-Bag-3-Season-Feathered-Friends-Purple-Spruce-/151850163661?hash=item235af99dcd
Nov 4, 2015 at 6:17 am #2235990Ian, I bought one for my grandson, it's due here tomorrow. I'll take some pictures and weigh it, then post a small review. It seems too good to be true but for $99 it was worth the gamble. Story at 11
Nov 4, 2015 at 1:40 pm #2236061I am definitely considering it however I can't find any kids sleeping bags on Feathered Friends website. I also can't find any sleeping bags with 750 fill down. I seem to recall they used to sell kids bags, but I don't ever recall them selling 750 fill down. Hmmmmm…. it sure is tempting, but it is suspicious at the same time.
Nov 4, 2015 at 2:01 pm #2236063I decided to order too. I notice there are three color available: http://www.ebay.com/itm/151848081775 http://www.ebay.com/itm/151871103803 http://www.ebay.com/itm/151850163661 I am thinking about emailing feathered friends to see if they believe these are legitimate bags of their's
Nov 4, 2015 at 10:20 pm #2236168I emailed the seller with a couple of questions, and recoeved a prompt reply. She has 100% positive feedback, so i have no reason to doubt they're authentic. Here's what she says: "The outside fabric used on the Blue/black sleeping bag is a high performance mini-ripstop nylon. The fabric does have some degree of water repellancy so that water will ball up and roll off the bag. Thanks for asking for clarification about the weight of the sleeping bag. The weight listed includes both the bag and stuff sack (i.e. what would typically be carried / used on a backpacking trip). The nylon stuff sack by itself weighs between 1 to 2 ounces, depending on sack design details. Hope that helps! Please let me know if you have additional questions. -Brita" And: "Yes, all the sleeping bags are brand new and in pristine condition! They are remaining inventory from my prior busines, Painter Outdoor Gear, and have been stored uncompressed in breathable containers in clean, dry storage. -Brita" All sounds legit to me. I'm mostly trying to compare these to EE quilts, which are lighter for the same rating, but lack hoods and zippers. I may get these to start with, and use lighter quilts for summer trips. Will keep everyone posted if i order!
Nov 5, 2015 at 12:11 am #2236185I can vouch for the seller, Brita. She was an MBA student at SF State when I taught there and is absolutely trustworthy and honest. She created her own outdoor gear business for children because she remembered how her father couldn't find gear that fit his children so the family made their own or modified adult gear to fit the kids. Her goal was for other families to have gear that was sized for kids and of good quality. My own grandkids have used gear produced by her former company and it's still in good shape.
Nov 5, 2015 at 9:20 am #2236219I emailed Feathered Friends and got this reply: Looks legit, just an older bag. I'm guessing that's a patch on the bag. Cheers, FF Perhaps, based on Jane's reply the patch FF is referring to has something to do with Brita's business. So it looks like a legit bag and one heck of a deal. I ordered. I like the weight of EE quilt better, but I am concerned about keeping my kids inside a quilt. I would rather carry a bit more weight to make sure they are warm all night. They seem to like to be enveloped in a bag too.
Nov 5, 2015 at 3:33 pm #2236274Got the bag today: > 62" overall length; 53" from foot to edge of collar > full length #5 (?) YKK 2 way zipper with fabric tab/plastic snap closure at top > draw string/toggle closure at neck > grosgrain hanging loop at foot > 720 grams (1 lb 9 3/8 oz) with stuff sack (45 grams) > stuff sack has gros grain handle at bottom > material is old style, heavier nylon (kid proof) > approx 4 1/2" loft (impressive) > stuffs down to 14" x 5" x 7" > hang tag says Made in America; Model = Fledgling 750+ fill Seems like a hell of a deal I have more pictures; pm me if you want them
Nov 5, 2015 at 6:14 pm #2236300Per a May 2012 Facebook posting by Feathered Friends the Fledgling sold for $269 and was made with their Nano fabric (?).
Nov 6, 2015 at 5:46 am #2236376EMAIL TO FF….Could you provide me with the down quantity in oz/gās of the 750fp down in the Fledgling Kids sleeping bag AND the fabric used. REPLY from Garrett>>>Fledgling is a generic name we've used for any kids size bags. We've never officially offered them but we've certainly made quite a few over the years. Unfortunately each one is unique so I have no way of knowing the specs on something purchased through Ebay.
Nov 6, 2015 at 7:57 am #2236390WHY IS IT ALWAYS CAPS FOR YOU!?! Did you even read Jane's post?
Nov 6, 2015 at 9:49 am #2236427Ben, I use an EE quilt for my 4 year old, who is a super active sleeper. He actually seems to stay in the bag (and on the pad) much better with a quilt than with a sleeping bag. The straps definitely help. He does have a tendency to slide down into the foot of the quilt a bit (sometimes sliding the quilt down on the pad) and I usually have to adjust once during the night. So far, I'm a fan of the EE quilts for little kids, but I ordered one of these bags thinking that he'll move into it as he gets bigger, and his little brother (currently 2) can adopt the quilt.
Nov 9, 2015 at 9:23 pm #2237152Big thanks to Ian! I bought two of these and they arrived today. They're perfect for my kids and I still can't believe the price. Thanks Ian!!!
Nov 9, 2015 at 11:10 pm #2237162Dido. My daughter loves her new sleeping bag and it should fits her for the next 7 years. Thanks! Can't wait to see what comes next from this eBay seller.
Nov 10, 2015 at 2:56 am #2237174I received mine as well. Absolutely blown away by the quality of the bag for $99. Unbelievable deal. Thanks for the heads up.
