Earlier in the thread airhorns were mentioned as a deterrent. Have there been any studies about their effectiveness? It seems that in a pinch, a totally surprised situation, you could skip the drawing and aiming part of using them and still hope for some sort of results.
I have tried to find studies on the effectiveness of air horns and have not been able to find any. Mine is so loud even at a fraction of full discharge, that it seems it would at least confuse the animal if not make it think twice about attacking something capable of making that kind of a noise. I will let you know ( I hope…) if I ever end up using it .
They make pepperball guns that use a magazine and resemble a semi-auto hand gun. Each mag holds 8 rounds. Some have the CO2 cartidge in the mag and others have it in the gun itself. You could easily carry extra mags to increase the number of uses. These are fairly reliable. I would not consider a normal paintball gun for use with pepperballs, especially an electro. The hand gun versions could be carried in a holster, the same as bear spray. The advantage would be the increased number of uses. The disadvantage would be the weight. I could go weight mine, but I know that it weights significantly more than a can of bear spray. When deploying it the best method would be to fire at the ground in front of the bear. That would create a highly irritating cloud in the same way bear spray works. Except this cloud would be more irritating. The pepperballs are going to break on a solid surface. The ground should provide that. Obviously this is more prone to user error than bear spray. I believe that Pepperballs would work well as a bear deterrent. They come with a significant weight penalty, however.
"Not… engaging… Tom… on… Ukraine… Whew. That was close." Damn!! I thought for a moment that I had you. :0))
