When I look around on this section of BPL I see very few true GEAR LISTS. Mike Clelland has laid out some basics for your introductory paragraph (forgive me, I'm a retired English teacher.) Try to follow his advice (which should be a STICKY for this page) THEN: list gear in main groups- This is a GREAT help. ("Thank You" to those who import their gear lists with weights!) 1. BIG THREE -> Tent, hammock, tarp (W/ bags, stakes, guy lines, etc.) -> Pack -> Sleep SYSTEM (bag, mattress and bivy sack, if appropriate) 2. KITCHEN -> Stove & fuel type (i.e Caldera Cone Tri-Ti with alcohol stove) -> Pot(s) (& skillet if taken) -> Utensil(s), stove legs, baking gear, coffee presses (!), etc. -> Fire starter (Bic lighter(s), Firesteel, Vaselined cotton balls, etc. 3. CLOTHING -> Sleep only clothing -> T shirts & briefs (or not ;o) -> Shirts, fleece mid layer -> Pants, shorts -> Socks -> outer layer including rain gear (yes, umbrellas too) -> caps, hats, gloves, balaclavas, scarves, etc. 4. ESSENTIALS -> Water treatment(s) -> Toilet kit -> Potty kit -> Compass, GPS, maps, SPOT emergency PLB type device -> Headlamp, flashlight -> Camera -> Dog gear, if appropriate -> Kid gear, " " 5. NON-ESSENTIAL "ESSENTIALS" -> Teddy bear (It gets DARK at night ;o) -> pillow -> book, iPod, etc. All this seeming "anality" is such a help to those of us who are looking for specifics in certain gear groups and great to help beginners who want to know how to organize their own list. Including brand names and model names of gear really helps too. Ex. Don't just say "Steripen", list "Steripen Adventurer"

Aug 28, 2015 at 4:30 pm #2223681Kinda strange, if you check in on his youtube channel it seems C! has moved on to extraterrestrials/UFOs. http://hiddenexperience.blogspot.com/2013/03/i-now-know.html Anyway, I certainly learned a lot from his books and videos related to backpacking.

Aug 28, 2015 at 7:49 pm #2223705LOL!
Aug 28, 2015 at 8:46 pm #2223712I like Mike C's alien videos. He has an entertaining way of presenting information, even kooky alien information. Besides, if I had a YouTube channel, it would be far more eclectic than Mike's, and way less useful and funny.
Aug 29, 2015 at 4:54 pm #2223833Might just be me, but i made my gear list for my use, i'll happily post it if someone thinks it will help them, but it's in a format that's useful to me. I like to be organised, so i have my kit organised in stuff sacks: Sleeping sack – Sleeping bag, mat, PJ's Warm sack – Pullover, gloves, hat Waterproofs – WP jacket, trousers, gloves Cook kit Food bag Toiletries Electronics Water filter bag I can then weight each bag before i leave and if there is any discrepancy in the weight i know i've not packed something or packed something else incorrectly
Sep 7, 2015 at 1:58 pm #2225410So Mike is now searching for evidence of ET? Cool. I wonder, will alien girls be easy? Mark, gear list FORMAT. Persactly! You hit the nail on the head. What is needed is a FORMAT, a TEMPLATE, a way to ORGANIZE gear into categories. 1st this makes it easier (for all) to find an item or find that it is missing. 2nd it helps when gear substitution is necessary, say for a cooler "shoulder season" trip, a kayak or canoe trip, etc.
Sep 10, 2015 at 5:31 am #2225877>>>| a way to ORGANIZE gear into categories I don't use a checklist but have a method of organizing Systems into piles, which are then put into their designated locations, stuff sacks, etc. It might be a trite, old model but it works every time for me: "A Place for Everything, and Everything in its Place". The whole ET thing has at times been interesting. Thinking of an earlier time when "Chariots of the Gods" (1974?) was rather intriguing, and I actually still enjoy watching "Close Encounters of the Third Kind"… but I'm snapped back to reality by the fact that the closest stars to our own Sun are the Alpha Centauri twins and that they're 4.3 light years away. That's a long, freakin' way, and there are no habitable planets there.
Sep 10, 2015 at 2:34 pm #2225977Hey, if we were all out in the remote backcountry as much as Mike C, we'd all be abducted by aliens too. ;-) I do similar to Bob M–keeping very loosely organized system sacks or drawers or maybe just a mental cluster of items. To keep those mental clusters in check, I use a checklist as a way to double-check that I haven't forgotten anything which will cause significant inconvenience.
