beautiful scenery and interviews along the trail with PCTers.
view for free here …May 29, 2015 at 2:17 pm #2203163I was surprised to see the footage that was stuffed in there that was nowhere near the PCT.

Jun 2, 2015 at 11:33 am #2204097Out of curiosity, like what Bob?
I noticed a distinct lack of geographic notation. You kind of got where a few locations were but I was surprised in post that they didn't put names or locations or things like that in the movie.
Jun 2, 2015 at 11:42 am #2204102One big example was Yosemite Valley. The views of the valley are pleasant, but that is nowhere near the Pacific Crest Trail (which is in Tuolumne Meadows).
No, there wasn't much geographic notation. By watching very closely, I was able to identify lots of trail areas.
I guess I didn't go for all of the metaphysical experience descriptions. I would have preferred to see some stovie demonstrating his great stove that he made for that trip, or maybe some backpacker demonstrating some DIY backpack.

:)Jun 3, 2015 at 8:39 am #2204326If it is geography and the Sierra Nevada (particularly around Yosemite) you will find Bob finding something wrong with it so he can criticize it. At this point, I thin it is simply to show off his knowledge….
Jun 3, 2015 at 9:34 am #2204341Thanks for sharing that Art. I thought it was great.
Jun 3, 2015 at 11:15 am #2204365Many people who hike the PCT, I'd say quite a large number of them, take an extra day or two to complete the JMT, perhaps climb Half Dome and go down into Yosemite Valley.

Art,
Thanks for sharing thisJun 3, 2015 at 11:28 am #2204370I, for one, was very upset to see footage from Mt. Whitney, which is clearly NOT on the PCT.
Jun 3, 2015 at 11:36 am #2204375Dave:
I suspect it's included because (1) the videographers went there and wanted to include it, and (2) so many thruhikers also make that short side trip, especially if they hope to notch the entire JMT by also taking the side trip from Tuolumne Meadows down to Yosemite Valley.
I was surprised to learn they slept in the hut. There are signs on it warning folks to stay out due to the risk of lightening strikes.
I was very surprised to see at least three examples of campfires, which are a real no-no given the very dry conditions for the last 3 years in CA.
The cinematography – especially the use of time-lapse shots of clouds moving over the hills, sunsets, etc. – was remarkable.

Good point that went right over my head. I was eating while it was on so I might have zoned out on my dinner at that point.
I was able to identify a lot of California's geography myself besides that softball. I noticed that they showed the Lassen wildfire that the PCT had to route around last year. Good timing on that I guess?
I was hoping for a little less metaphysical stuff too and some more discussions of doing… well… more with less. Not even someone showing off their cat stove but just more discussion about doing more with less. But that never happened at all.
I'm also grumpy about the whole "the only thing that's preventing you from doing it is your choice not to!" BS. So sorry, I care for an 85 year old grandmother with Alzheimer's out of necessity and kissing off for 5-6 months isn't an option right now. Or rather, if I have a shred of humanity in me it isn't an option. I get it though. If you're fresh out of college and have nothing but that mountain of debt waiting for you then yeah, it's a prime time to go (if you have an extra several thousand dollars sitting around).
