Strong rumors that sony will announce the next model in the rx100 series, and that it'll have a 4/3's size sensor but similar weight and dimensions to the current model. Oi, I wish they would stop improving this thing, my upgraditis is killing me.

    @10-7

I've been impressed with the RX100s thus far and as I see it, one of a couple things will happen.

    1) Sony knocks it out of the park with the iv, I save my lunch money for a few months and buy it; or
    2) Sony knocks it out of the park with the iv, Jennifer saves her lunch money for a few weeks, sells me her iii, and takes the lunch money and the money from the sale and buys the iv. Wash rinse repeat when the v is released.

Hey Serge – the rumourmill went into overdrive in mid April about an imminent announcement about the RX100 Mk IV and a replacement for the A6000. Sony held a press release, but neither of those models was mentioned. The lag between announcement and retail availability has typically been 4-6 weeks. If an announcement happened tomorrow, they wouldn't hit the stores till early July. Summer's effectively half over by then. My guess is, they'll wait to announce in October for the Christmas rush.

At least that's what I'm telling myself, having just bought a Ricoh GR. I almost picked up an Olympus OMD EM5 on closeout from B&H, but I would have been too tempted to build a whole system of prime lenses. If Sony do announce a Mk IV next week, one with a m4/3 sensor, then I will probably have to bite that bullet. But the GR is so well designed…

yeah, sony is really outdoing itself on the tech side. The rx100 and the rx100m3 have really changed how I do photography in a good way. I even bring mine on local runs and hikes in the flatirons that I've done ad infinitum. Having a whole camera kit with you for the purpose of 'getting the shot' can be a strange distraction and ad too much complexity on a lot of trips. Without sacrificing too much quality, this little guy does the same thing, except you can sling it from your pocket in an instant and be on your way. That said I can't help but think sony is going knock it out of the park as they've been doing with these small high quality cams. From tests I've seen, the IQ of the RX100 is in some ways on par or better than the pana LX100 with its bigger size and 4/3's sensor. I can only imagine what sony would do with a bigger sensor.

I wish it would come out. I'd consider it for the JMT in August. I'm waffling between A6000 or my D7100 at the moment….but the capabilities and size of the rx100 IV might trump them.

Agreed, Serge, having too many options means you carry more than you need, and usually you have the wrong lens mounted for that critical shot. I generally prefer prime lenses over zooms and sticking with a single focal length means you get to learn how to visualise before you shoot. That being said, 28mm is pretty wide as a fixed length. The Ricoh GR has crop modes for 35mm and 47mm, but the file sizes are quickly reduced. What I particularly like about the GR is how intuitive it is. The controls I want are readily to hand. It's a camera designed with photographers in mind (shock horror!) The one criticism I've heard about the RX100 line and the A6000 is that they are rather uninvolving to shoot with. Still, when a m4/3 RX100 Mk IV comes out I'll certainly be giving it a careful look over.

You can get that already, its called a Panasonic GM1

except that if you want the equivalent (24-70mm)lens on the Pana it will look like this:
    same same but
The GM on the right has the 14mm lens on (28mm equivalent) , the smallest available for that camera.

Compared to the RX100 III, the GM1 with kit 12-32mm (24-64mm equiv) zoom is:
    Width: 3mm less
    Height: 3mm less
    Depth: 14mm more
    Weight: 16g less

So, just 14mm more for an equivalent lens, less in all other dimensions and less weight.
I think that counts as similar weight and dimensions to the current model

He fact that the rx100 has been getting chubbier is one thing that has made me happy with the MkI.

It'll undoubtedly get more so with a 4/3 sensor as well.

Penny and Sony seem to be driving this sector thoug, which is great.

Although a micro 4/3's sensor has its advantages, I do think that the mark 1-3 with their 1 inch sensors strikes a nice balance between pixel density and depth of field. For most landscape work I prefer greater depth of field anyway. I find myself shooting a lot at dusk with the sony at wider apertures like f3.5 that I wouldn't be able to get away with using a larger sensor. That combined with the excellent image stabilization on the sony, makes it a great hand held available light landscape shooter. As for getting chubbier, I went from an rx100 to a mark 3 and the weight gain and size difference is small enough to shrug off. Its not something I've thought about even once.

I know dpreview has harped ad infinitum about the poor usability of the rx and I think its really over stated (so what if the lense wheel doesn't click). The auto focus is super fast for a p & s, the shutter is very response and the screen is quite usable in most lighting conditions.

The Rx100s have a size advantage only if you're actually carrying it in your pocket, which isn't the most comfortable or practical for backpacking. I've used the original rx100 and both the gm1 and 5 and at least for me the pannys have a clear advantage when it comes to ergonomics. IQ is basically a wash with the kit lens. The thing with the 1/5 is you can put on any one of the primes and it walks all over the Sony for IQ. Even if it isn't for backpacking, the RX100 can't touch something like the tiny/cheap/fantastic 45/1.8.

That said, I'll definitely be keeping my eye on the IV.

Doesn't look like any major upgrades over the iii. Little more resolution in the view finder. More frames per second. Plus who knows what else.

Hopefully it will drive down the price of the iii for Santa to want to buy me one. I have a i and it has been great. Only thing I really would like is a view finder — although the iii is thicker and heavier than the i and not as much zoom.

    If I had Idster's money I would buy a RX1.

    Still no audio jack. Bummer.

I'm with Nick on this one. I don't need 4K and while having a 2349k evf would be great, I'm fine with what the iii offers.

Now I just have to wait for the cash in my wallet and the sale price of the iii to reach equilibrium.
