The Specter is an appropriate name; it is a spector to review the cost! I love Patagonia, it wears forever. The thing is, it is difficult for me to justify spending $225 on a rain coat that you may wear a few times on the trail but if you are doing the Appalation Trail it would be worth it because a friend i know had to bail his son out because they had rain for 2 weeks straight on the trail in 2004 when they went and it was miserable. I really would have spent $150 but $225! I am upset i don’t have tons of money laying around because i have gotten my moneys worth out of most of their stuff. I trust an Event material because it doesn’t rely on a coating to perform. And you don’t have to worry too much about body oils killing the breathability. I can wait another year for better ideas to present themselves. Integral Designs need to get with it and get pit zips on their event jacket that is a jacket i would wear any season then. So what if is the most breathable material having cool air get to the pits is such a great commodity. I think Montbell has the best jacket design in their Versa light jacket although Patagonia’s new full zip has pit zips which are nice but are not made of Event and Event has me sold. For a temporary jacket at low cost you could get a red ledge jacket but the cheapest i’ve found was on clearance rack at Target in the Sporting goods dept and it had a top and bottom for $8.78 size med and $16.44 for large due to volume the cost is higher on a higher selling item. The jacket is 9.5 oz in large and the parts were around 5.75 oz. The material is red ledge type material but not made of a higher end rip stop like Red Ledge. It really is nice looking gear too. That was a suprise actually. It will do fine for the few times i will use it up in Michigan. I have the Montane Lite Speed Jacket and their pants. These are not water proof but water resistant. Great gear, but i dont like the zipper on my jacket it keeps getting lodged in the fabric when i want to zip it. A word i would give to manufacterers is to incorporate a pocket on the gear to tuck into itself. Haveing a stuff bag for everything is silly. Outdoor research (OR) does a good job with this.
