Last year, I hiked the entire Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada carrying a pack with an average base weight of less than five pounds. In the past, I had hiked the Marble Mountains with a pack weight of fifty pounds, which included college text books. I'd be misleading if I said the heavy days were all bad. I'd be outright lying if I said lightweight isn't much better.
