>It also has higher end built quality (e.g. double folded edges and full double stitching) while costing less.
Dan, that is absolutely not true. As you well know, the SS2 is made at exactly the same factory that makes your X-Mid Dyneema models and has all the seam construction and quality that goes with it.
Feb 24, 2023 at 6:34 pm #3774135Wouldn’t that only be true if each and every vendor subscribes to the same manufacturing technique(s) to achieve an end result. Doesn’t the vendor dictate to the factory what it wants for an individual product? Just because something comes from the same factory doesn’t necessarily mean similar results between multiple name tags or brand names. Intellectual property.
Feb 24, 2023 at 6:49 pm #3774136If I or anyone were to state something about a tent that wasn’t true or accurate, NOT letting the designer write a rebuttal would be dishonest. It would mean that a random opinion from the wilds of the internet, with no bona fides or possible affiliations or personal animus, etc, required, would be privileged over the designer of the tent. The designer would be censored, even as the possibly wrong or insane accuser would be allowed to continue as a matter of course.
So, yeah, the forum has to allow anyone, even a designer and seller of a tent, weigh in on matters concerning their tents.
I’ve often accused Jerry of being the source of rampant Gerrymandering in the U.S.. Jerry has a vested interest in the subject. Fortunately, the mods here allow Jerry to respond. My conspiracy theory is debunked. That’s a good thing.
P.S. do we use one or two periods when ending a sentence with “U.S.”?
Feb 24, 2023 at 7:00 pm #3774138Conflict of interest is something gear makers should be aware of when critiquing a competitor’s products. Ethics 101. But if you’re gonna go there don’t get butt hurt when the inevitable counter attacks come your way. You reap what you sow. However nobody seems to be vindictive or holding grudges just because they’ve been challenged, which is a good thing.
I’m sure the X-Mid is an excellent trekking pole shelter, yet this whole notion that every tent which has come before is now obsolete is freakin comical.
Feb 24, 2023 at 7:43 pm #3774142I’m sorry for how my comment derailed this thread. We do request the factories do extra steps to double stitch areas that aren’t normally double stitched so I mentioned this as a positive about my tents and did not mean to imply a critique of the SS (which I’ve already mentioned in ‘very well built’). I could further explain the additional areas we double stitch but it is semantics so I will leave the matter there.
Feb 24, 2023 at 7:47 pm #3774143I don’t read that as obsolete. Evolution perhaps. Otherwise we’d still drive cars with carburetors. Back in the day, when Harley brought out the EVO, we were throwing blankets over our shovels. sigh. End of an era but the start of another. I dunno. I hope all this barking goes away soon. I’m falling dahn that rabbit hole. Must. Step. Away. Go. Hiking.
Mar 7, 2023 at 12:56 pm #3775143Tarptent recently began using a “solid” material that is actually LIGHTER in weight than the mesh material!
I have the ne, lightweight solid inner with my TT Notch Li and like it very much.
